Job summary
The nurse specialist will assist in the assessment and treatment of patients with alcohol related problem, provide appropriate disease related advice and promote health education in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
They maybe expected to carry out specialist nursing and clinical procedures and refer patients appropriately and timely, for investigations and to other service providers. They will assist in delivering staff education programmes, ongoing advice and clinical supervision to other health care professionals. They will accept referrals from other Health Care Professionals; work unsupervised and may manage their own clinics, with regular monitoring/clinical supervision from the GI consultants.

Main duties of the job
- To comprehensively assess patients, gaining information about their physical health, mental health, social issues as well as their alcohol history to format a plan of care based on the patient's individual needs.
- To advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, including detoxification medication and vitamin prescribing.
- To advise and support emergency department staff on the admission criteria for patients with alcohol misuse issues attending the department.
- To liaise with other professionals both within the hospital and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient, including raising safeguarding concerns and referrals to local recovery services.
- Work closely with the Alcohol Care Team's Recovery Navigator identifying patients requiring their interventions.
- To provide training to Trust staff on screening and brief interventions, and to participate in the development and delivery of education programmes, offering ongoing advice and clinical supervision to other healthcare professionals.
