Bank assignments will be available at times of staffing shortages and will include working in our community and hospital settings.

Bank assignments will be offered to staff to provide assessment and treatment to patients with a range of acquired communication and / or swallowing difficulties.

Main duties of the job

The main SLT service runs 5 days per week, Monday to Friday, and weekend cover is provided on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at the Northumbria Emergency Care Hospital.

Our staff team delivers high quality services to adults with acquired communication and swallowing problems across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Sessions within our voice and upper airways team will involve working with patients with voice disorders, chronic cough, inducible laryngeal occlusion and respiratory disorders.

We work closely with consultant colleagues within the Northumbria respiratory service, and have excellent links with the Freeman ENT service.

Our community service works with patients within our community hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing, care and residential homes and within patients own homes. Our community staff are based in locality teams delivering assessment and intervention to patients with a range of communication and/or swallowing difficulties within a given geographical locality.

Our Acute service is based in the Northumbria Emergency Care Hospital and within Wansbeck, North Tyneside and Hexham General Hospitals. The Acute SLT team offer dysphagia assessments and communication support to patients staying on acute and hyperacute wards and also are part of hospital rehabilitation teams. Our clients present with a wide range of aetiologies, including stroke, dementia, neurology, respiratory and gastro conditions. We have a well-established voice, ENT and respiratory service. Our staff demonstrate empathy with clients, carers, families and colleagues and strive to ensure that effective communication is achieved with all patients and their families, particularly where barriers to communication exist.
