Job summary

Band 5 fixed term 1 year Support Accountant - Costing reporting to the Costing & Pricing Accountant.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Principal Finance Manager / Directorate Accountant in providing a high quality financial management accounting service to several Directorates.
  • To supervise the Senior Accountancy Assistant and undertake specific projects as defined by the Principal Finance Manager / Directorate Accountant.
  • To organise, co-ordinate, input and manipulate data within the computerised accounting system.
  • To produce monthly financial management budget reports for managers within strict financial timescales, together with supporting information, and analyse and report on reasons for expenditure varying from budget.
  • To analyse complex financial trends and compile forecasts of income and expenditure.
  • To investigate queries and provide advice, support and training to Directorate Managers.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Must be actively studying towards a Professional Accountancy qualification i.e. Certificate Level of CCAB or CIMA professional accountancy qualification, full Member of Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or equivalent experience to degree level.
  • Sound knowledge of finance computer systems (e.g. Oracle and Discoverer), financial coding structures, ledgers, accounting standards and NHS financial regime. Acquired through gaining at least part-qualified Professional Accountancy qualification or equivalent significant experience working alongside professional accountants.
  • Skilled in the use of spreadsheets, databases and word processing through studying towards ECDL accreditation or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential both orally and in writing, with such experience covering a broad range of management and non-finance staff. For example:-
  • To meet budget holders on a regular basis to report and discuss financial positions,
  • To attend meetings in the absence of the Principal Finance Manager/Directorate Accountant on average once a month.
