Job summary
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an additional Paediatric Consultant to be based at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Hospital in Cramlington on a full time basis (part time hours would also be considered).
This is an additional post to complement our existing team of Consultant General Paediatricians, Specialist Doctors and Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioners.
The successful candidate will come from a background in General Paediatrics but we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with a specialist interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
They will have a major role in the development of the Children's Unit at the Northumbria Hospital which comprises an integrated children's emergency department, assessment unit and overnight observation ward.
You will work alongside other Consultant Paediatricians and participate in the training of Junior Doctors and Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioners in the department.
Main duties of the job
The is post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week which includes some resident working in the evenings but not overnight.
You will have an equal share in the "Consultant of the Week" rota.

Job responsibilities
The Job Plan will typically include an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties and 1.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities (if full time).
A proposed job plan has been outlined in Appendix 4 of the job description and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.
The post holder will be jointly responsible for the provision of paediatric services to the population of North Tyneside and Northumberland. The post holder will be encouraged to develop ambulatory services provided in the Northumbria Childrens Unit and will work with managers and professional colleagues in ensuring maximum efficiency of the service.
They will manage personal workload in such a way to ensure where possible service contract levels are achieved. Participate in the provision of cover on a shared basis with colleagues for periods of annual, sickness and study leave, accept for prolonged absence where locum cover may be necessary.
Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care and assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.
Maintain an awareness and commitment to organisational priorities and ensure these are communicated effectively to colleagues and staff. Engage constructive debates about organisational issues through a willingness to interact positively with managers showing mutual respect to ensure a similar level of respect in turn.
Effectively balance loyalty to the service and to the organisation through corporate behaviours and have an ability to anticipate change in current political climates showing an awareness of where the team sits in the bigger picture.
Understand the wider health economy and the implications for the Trust whilst working within organisational constraints with willingness to compromise and share resources.
