Job summary

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Specialty Grade in Critical care and Anaesthetics working across the trust at Wansbeck General Hospital, North Tyneside General Hospital, Hexham General Hospital and The Northumbria Hospital on a full-time or part-time basis. The job will mainly involve critical care at the Northumbria Hospital with an expected contribution to the on-call resident rota for this speciality.

Role is fixed term until August 2024. The candidate should have at least two years' experience in UK Anaesthesia and/or critical care. Previous experience performing out of hours on-call in Intensive Care Medicine at resident level is essential, with clear evidence of competence for advanced airway and ventilator management at the level expected at the completion of core anaesthesia training.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work a resident 8 person full shift system alongside the other resident doctors and ACCP's in the critical care department. A proportion of daytime clinical anaesthesia sessions could form part of the successful candidate's job plan. This would be negotiated with the successful candidate based on their experience, levels of competence, educational and personal development needs as well as service demands.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a quality improvement project within critical care and will be supported by a named supervisor during their appointment with us.

About us

Our trust is innovative and progressive, employing 12,000 staff to serve a population of 500,000 with an extensive range of acute and community health care. It was recognised as "Outstanding" at the CQC inspection in 2016, and again in 2019. Most of the population lives in the more urban South East corner of the largely rural area which stretches from the River Tyne to the River Tweed, a distance of 65 miles, and from the coast to the North Northumberland Coast and the Northumberland National Park offering some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in England.

The Trust opened its new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (The Northumbria) as the first of its kind in England in June 2015. The Trust also manages three major elective care hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed. Benefiting from substantial capital investment recently and with a further £50 million of hospital schemes under construction, the Trust's c.1,000 beds are all in new, attractive low-rise and purpose-built facilities on spacious sites. A further c.300 beds are provided in seven community hospitals.

As part of its pursuit of excellence, the Trust has introduced a clinically-based management structure to ensure patient care and medical interests always drive decision-making. The consultant body is both cohesive and innovative and a number of senior clinicians are prominent nationally.
