Job summary
This training post involves completion of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner Postgraduate Masters degree provided by Northumbria University. Training includes a Non-Medical prescribing qualification. Full details of modules can be found at Advanced Clinical Practitioner MSc (northumbria.ac.uk). On qualification ACCP's will be required to apply for FICM accreditation. As well as the educational component provided by Northumbria University, practical experience, further education and portfolio completion will take place on the Critical Care unit at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.
For candidates who are already employed as a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) training will be provided by a FICM approved conversion route from ACP to ACCP. This would involve 2 years based on Critical Care to complete the required Critical Care portfolio paid at a Band 7. 2 years previous Critical care experience remain mandatory for those wishing to undertake the conversion route.
This post falls within the provisions of Agenda for Change Annex 20 - Development of Professional Roles, whereby upon completion of an agreed set of competencies you may move onto the next pay band without the need for an application for a post at a higher level.

Main duties of the job
The ACCP team work closely with the extended critical care team and alongside medical colleagues. They work autonomously or under Consultant supervision in specific circumstances to deliver patient care to Level 1-3 critically ill patients across the Trust. The role includes assessment and management of critically ill patients including interventions such as intubation and ventilation, invasive line insertion, requesting and facilitating investigations, inter and intra-hospital transfers and reviews of patients on acute wards and in the Emergency Department. The ACCP role encompasses the 4 pillars of advanced practice; Clinical, Leadership, Education and Research & Development and the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate application of each pillar within their job role.
Good communication is essential in this role with the need to provide accurate and effective clinical handovers, forge good relationships with members of the Critical Care MDT and other specialities and with appropriate training facilitate conversations around treatment escalation planning, resuscitation and delivering bad news to patients and their family members.
This post requires an ambitious individual with an enthusiasm for Critical care practice, a commitment to lifelong learning and who can demonstrate readiness to be in an advanced practice role.
