Job summary

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic people who are willing to learn and get stuck in for an Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery at the following sites:

  • North Tyneside General Hospital (North Shields)
  • Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (Cramlington)
  • Wansbeck General Hospital (Ashington)
  • Hexham General Hospital

This is a fantastic opportunity to start your NHS and Facilities Management career, doing a role that will really make a difference to the community.

The duration of the apprenticeship will initially be 24 months. You will complete a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship and then progress onto Level 3 (15 months duration) on successful completion of Level 2.

You will gain hands-on experience for 4 days per week and will conduct learning activities on the 5th day on day release to a local college.

Pay is £10.42 per hour (equivalent to the National Minimum Wage).

We will guarantee a position at the end of the Level 3 apprenticeship - subject to successful completion and meeting our expected standards during the course of your employment.

Main duties of the job

To work under the supervision/guidance of supervisor in the delivery of high-quality joinery service within the Estates department.

Assist with daily workload within a department.

To gain relevant work based learning with an estates environment.

Become prepared and knowledgeable within the working environment and work towards gaining a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery.

To work under the guidance of a supervisor or manager, and assist in the implementation of a high-quality joinery service to the Trust.

To attend and participate in structured teaching/ theory sessions to gain the identified educational framework to a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Gain experience and a level of competence in the joiner role.

Working with building materials (most often wood) to create and install building components. This typically involves shaping and cutting materials, installing finished materials like partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, timber floor coverings and erecting structural components such as floor joists and roofs.

Locate, handle, store, load, transport and position materials and components safely, minimising damage so they are ready for application.

Prepare the site/workshop (including access equipment when necessary), power and hand tools appropriate to the project.

Use and maintain hand tools, power tools and associated equipment to achieve optimum performance.

Maintain a clear and tidy workspace and ensure that waste materials are disposed of in accordance with current legislation

Responsible for achieving a high-quality finish at the appropriate pace.

Carry out quality checks against specification and take remedial action where required or instructed

If not already achieved, the apprentice will be required to attempt Level 2 in Functional Skills as part of their apprenticeship programme.
