Job summary

The North East & North Cumbria (NENC) Integrated Care System (ICS) are seeking to recruit a Public Health Practitioner on a 2-year secondment/fixed term contract working across the North East & North Cumbria region. Working as part of a small specialist team responsible for the NENC ICS Population Health & Prevention Board priorities pertaining to maternity and 1001 critical days, the role aims to sustain preventative health practices, improve maternity safety, improve service user experiences and decrease neonatal admissions, stillbirths and sudden infant deaths.

This role will include specific support for all the NENC maternity units working with Heads of Midwifery and their staff to overcome local barriers to implementation to support the teams to embed population health priorities across the whole of the patch.

Main duties of the job

The Public Health Practitioner will be instrumental in embedding the NENC ICS Population Health & Prevention Board priorities for maternity and the first 1001 critical days. Working closely with the LMS, Heads of Midwifery, their staff, Maternity Voices Partnerships and all relevant stakeholders, the postholder will support local teams to overcome local barriers to implementation on improving outcomes aligned to the maternity prevention priorities. Subject to review these may include: tobacco, alcohol, breastfeeding, perinatal mental health (PMH), healthy weight, immunisations, making every contact count (MECC).

  • Provide and receive complex information; persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training skills are required.
  • Leading the transformation in culture to ensure prevention is a high priority within all maternity units and associated local systems.
  • Ability to operate autonomously as a professional.
  • Ability to work at a strategic level with excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Experience of writing and presenting reports to managers.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of confidential information management.
  • Convene and co-chair meetings.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of ICT and its application, in particular word processing and excel spreadsheets.
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept and that these are available for audit purposes if necessary.
  • To be able to provide advice on public health issues as required on behalf of the NENC ICS Population Health & Prevention board.
