Senior Occupational Therapist- AMU, Band 6 (30 hours a week)

We are delighted to be able to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join our Acute Inpatient Therapy service as part of the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Therapy team. To deliver specialist therapy input to patients presenting at the earliest stage of their admission. The role will demand assessment of patients to facilitate efficient and effective discharge. In addition, assessment of those patients that require admission to determine appropriate therapy intervention and pathway.

This post will change to meet the demands of the service but will be centralised at "the front door" at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

You will be part of a team that is growing and evolving to meet the demands of acute care. This will require creative and critical thinking to evaluate and develop the service to meet and adapt to those needs.

Main duties of the job

Deliver therapeutic interventions, acting as a specialist clinician using Occupational Therapy principles.

Assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the clinical area.To supervise and appraise junior therapists, support workers and undergraduates.

Participate in the supervision, caseload monitoring and clinical education of junior therapists, support workers and undergraduate students.

Support evaluation and service development in the clinical area in line with national and local drivers. Be responsible for the organisation of own caseload .

Communicate with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to aid effective patient care.

Support leadership within the Therapy team, providing an effective and evidence-based service through assessing, planning and implementing treatment programmes.

Maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with departmental and professional standards. Support audit and research projects, to further own and team's clinical practice. To contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda .

Participate in the out of hours service at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and/or Cheltenham General Hospital after appropriate induction and training as required.*

Communicate effectively with patients and carers potentially complex, sensitive or distressing information.

Daily manual handling of patients both with and without equipment; with a range of weights and disabilities

Essential

  • Degree/diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • Experience of working in the NHS in UK
  • Experience of supervising, appraising, and providing education/training to others
  • Deliver a high level of skill in assessment and management of complex patients.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, verbal, non-verbal and written when interacting with patients/carers, other team members and the MDT.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply and utilise evidence based practice, including National guidelines to deliver, evaluate and audit the service.
  • Demonstrate the ability to network with other professionals and set up close working relations
  • Work flexibly in response to the changing demands of the service and manage changes in service delivery in self and others.

  • Have an understanding of the principles of physiotherapy as well as occupational therapy in order to contribute to the development of an integrated therapy service.
  • Experience in providing education and training/supervision for under- and post-graduate students and other healthcare professionals in this clinical area.
