Job summary

The Team Leader (Nursing Education) facilitates the development of the workplace as a sustainable quality learning environment for all nursing staff including registered nurses, pre-registration nursing students, health care support workers, return to practice and apprentices, working across Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Team Leader (Nursing Education) leads a team and together work collaboratively with the operational/ward teams, practice supervisors and assessors, learners and academic institution colleagues to enable effective practice learning and increase placement capacity.

Main duties of the job

1. Professionally lead a team of Practice Education Facilitators and a HCSW Development Educator

2. Identify, manage and increase placement capacity for undergraduate nursing students, SNAs and RNDA's within the organisation, ensuring high quality clinical learning environments and positive learner experiences.

3. Provide specialist educational knowledge to safeguard learning and teaching in clinical practice & ensure it complies with the NMC standards of proficiency and the quality assurance framework for Nursing, Midwifery and Nursing Associates education (NMC, 2019)

4. Provide regular reports on the uptake of the delivery of the Practice Supervisor and Assessor Training and Practice Assessor Updates within the Trust, ensuring compliance and year-on-year improvements in the uptake of this training provision.

5. Support and embed the principles of the Safe Learning Environment Charter, across Nursing placement areas.

6. Lead on the planning, delivery and evaluation of education and development opportunities for HCSW within the organisation.

7. Provides reports, presentations and action plans to enhance placement quality based upon learner feedback and utilizing these to form the basis of annual plans of work.

8. Responsible for cross checking the nursing placement tariff is accurate and representative, using the NHSE portal and local rosters.

Job responsibilities

Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient records, email, social media and Microsoft.

Maintain regular use of emails, leading and managing several shared in boxes to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust

Always adhere to the NMC code of practice and operate within the NMC scope of professional practice.

Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Accountability, responsibility and Duty of Care and work towards the provision of support and education for less experienced and non-registered staff on implications for practice.

Ensure clinical and educational practice is evidence based or peer reviewed best practice and that educational governance spans across all workstreams.

Keep self-up to date with changes to Nurse Education and how to support and assess students in practice.

Responsible for quality placement environments including supporting teaching and education of learners whilst on placement.

Develops nursing student forum to provide educational opportunities for learners on placements, including apprentices and T level students.

Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical educational excellence in all service provision

Support research-based changes to improve patient centred care

Remain up-to-date and a strong positive role model in all mandatory training and appraisal reviews as required for self and the team

Develop approaches to ensure learners know how to raise and escalate concerns and gather feedback to make improvements.

Takes a lead on ensuring HEIs have completed placement audits, working alongside clinicians to maintain accuracy for learners.

Provides written reports on placement feedback, ensuring action plans are developed where placement quality is reduced.

Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and undergoing regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.

Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.

Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust, and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.

Leads on developing and maintaining comprehensive records and provision of reports to stakeholders within the organization regarding placement capacity, feedback and communication.

Responsible for cross checking the nursing placement tariff is accurate and representative, using the NHSE portal and local rosters.

Deliver, evaluate and ensure accurate records of training for the Practice Supervisor and Assessor Training (Nursing) and Practice Assessor Updates, providing adequate training opportunities, reports and presentations as required.

Provide expert professional support and facilitation to unit managers/team leaders to plan and evaluate their educational learning environment so that the CLiP coaching model can be effectively used

Lead on the coordination of Nursing clinical placements including BSc students across GHNHSFT, liaising with HEIs and developing ways to increase placement capacity.

Provide pastoral support to BSc students, Student Nursing Associates and Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices while on programme supporting retention of our future Nursing Associates and Registered Nurses

Embed principles of the safe learning environment charter, including induction, networking and placement evaluations, looking for innovative ways of working to make service improvements

Ensures Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessors and Nursing Students implement and review reasonable adjustments and makes improvements for how learners with specific physical and mental health needs are supported with the organisation i.e. neurodiversity

Responsible for providing adequate training to ensure Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessors understand HEI practice documentation and how to support the failing student

Provides reports, presentations and action plans to enhance placement quality based upon learner feedback and utilizing these to form the basis of annual plans of work.
