Trust Hand Surgery Fellow

Job summary

We are seeking applicants for a middle grade surgeon with a subspecialist interest in hand & wrist surgery.

Initially the appointee will work under supervision from consultant colleagues, but it is envisaged that after 6-12 months, they will be performing a fair amount of clinical work independently, depending on previous experience and progression.

There is currently a general orthopaedic on call component to the post (1:18) but this will be reviewed and negotiated if the postholder is invited to extend the contract as a substantive contract. The post is for one year, but the contract can be renewed depending on the performance of the postholder.

This is a full-time post. However, any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide high quality care for orthopaedic patients in theatres (including procedure room), clinic (including virtual fracture clinic), Trauma Assessment Unit and the wards
  • To participate in the morning trauma meetings
  • To take part in the 1:18 middle grade on-call rota
  • Professional Development, Education and Training
  • To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per Royal College guidelines To attend the monthly departmental meetings, To attend relevant courses (e.g. BSSH hand courses) and meetings to improve skills and knowledge in hand surgery

  • Opportunities for research and innovation to develop our local services, To assist the hand surgical team with ongoing service evaluation projects and initiate new projects

The consultants are supported by a team of 9 Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors and 18 Trust Registrars and Trainees. The Specialty Trainees are part of the Severn Deanery rotation from Bristol.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a colleague who already has some experience in performing hand and wrist surgery, in addition to upper limb surgery and general Orthopaedics. Applicants will have ideally passed the FRCS and ideally be a member of the BSSH. It is not necessary to have completed a hand fellowship, but it would be advantage to have worked in Plastic Surgical Unit. It is essential to have completed at least 6 months working as a registrar with a Hand and Wrist Consultant and to be able to demonstrate a strong interest in developing a career in Hand and Wrist surgery.

The appointee will work closely with the three Orthopaedic hand surgeons and three upper limb surgeons. They will also liaise closely with the multi-disciplinary Gloucestershire Hand service including 6 hand therapists and services provided by the 6 MSK Orthopaedic Practitioners. They will also work closely with two of our registrars attached to the hand team.

The Orthopaedic Department has undergone significant changes in recent years. We are always striving to develop both our elective and emergency hand surgery in Gloucestershire and this presents an opportunity for continued improvement for our hand surgery service.

Elective surgery is performed mainly in Cheltenham, Cirencester and Tewkesbury Hospitals. Trauma surgery is performed mainly in Gloucester. Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester are equipped with mini-C arms, which you will be trained to use. The trauma service is busy we run 2-3 all day trauma lists 7 days a week. We have a significant amount of hand trauma and manage all injures locally except burns and those requiring microsurgery.
