Job summary

This is a new substantive appointment in the Upper GI Surgery Department in the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join an ambitious team of 7 upper GI consultants to provide general and specialist upper GI care to the population of Gloucestershire and beyond. This post would be for a new colleague to join the department's cancer resection team.

The Three Counties Oesophago-Gastric Centre provides the breadth of Upper GI cancer care incorporating all aspects of oesophageal and gastric cancer management, metabolic and bariatric surgery, advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques including pioneering robotic surgeries and advanced endoscopic services including endoscopic mucosal and sub-mucosal resection, radiofrequency ablation and EUS guided interventions. It is the busiest benign biliary unit in the South-West with ample opportunity for clinical research.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to support and further develop the general upper GI service for the residents of Gloucestershire. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the Trust.

The appointment to this post has the following aims:

To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of Upper GI patients. The Trust is committed to providing equitable working conditions with colleagues for new appointments.

To share in a comprehensive 1:8 rota for emergency and elective general and Upper GI care

To provide expertise and leadership within the Three Counties Oesophago-gastric Centre based in Gloucestershire Hospitals. Including:

o Oesophago-gastric resection using minimally invasive and ERAS techniques

o Comprehensive management of benign upper GI surgical conditions

o Specialist Benign Upper GI and general surgery clinics

o 2WW and MDT Cancer clinics

Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service (with opportunity to develop/acquire specialist endoscopy skills

o MDT attendance

o Service development

To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests. Appropriate additional duties would be incorporated into the post-holders job-plan after initial job-plan review.

To contribute to the ongoing reconfiguration of GI and emergency general surgery in Gloucestershire.

To work closely with an outstanding team of 5 cancer nurse specialists.

It is envisioned that this post will work to consolidate our close ties to Worcestershire, which will likely include on site sessions.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to a Consultant-led service.

It is envisioned that a new appointee would be supported with advanced mentoring from senior colleagues, particularly with the oesophago-gastric resections.

Clinical Responsibilities:

The appointee will be expected: -

To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the department

To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Department
To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call
To carry out ward round

Education and Training

To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations.

To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.

To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, SpRs, STs and other staff as appropriate

Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning. This would be agreed at initial job-plan review (6-12 months) and reflected in SPA allocation.

Two education fellows have recently been appointed and laparoscopic simulation equipment has been updated. Opportunities exist to be involved with helping to develop the existing excellent training environment at GHFT.

To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements
