Job summary

Overview

The team have a substantive post working exclusively within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology service at Gloucestershire Hospitals Trusts.

Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content can be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Job purpose

The post-holder will help provide specialist Obstetric services. They will provide on call support overnight, and on weekends, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. They will be expected to work closely with general practitioners, midwifery colleagues, allied health professionals, obstetric, anaesthetic and neonatal staff to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality outcomes within national targets.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities

  • The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Department
  • To examine and treat patients within the Department as required by clinical demand
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols
  • To remain contactable and available when on call / on duty
  • To carry out regular ward rounds in a timely fashion

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCOG
  • Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months)
  • ATSM Advanced Labour Ward Practice
  • ATSM High Risk pregnancy

Desirable

  • Qualifications in healthcare Management or Leadership
  • Additional degrees, diplomas or postgraduate thesis to specialty

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience in Obstetrics equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrate ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to lead emergency obstetric services in and out of hours
  • Ability to perform fetal growth scans and uterine artery doppler studies
  • Experience in the care of high risk pregnancy

Desirable

  • Experience at consultant level

Research and publications

Essential

  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
