Job summary

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a respiratory consultant. This role will to support the ongoing sustainability of Respiratory services in Gloucestershire, including supporting thoracic malignancy services and interstitial lung disease.

Main duties of the job

Respiratory medicine has been identified as the vanguard service for the Strategic Transformation Programme for Gloucestershire in recognition of the strong and dynamic links between the acute trust and the community-based integrated respiratory team. This post will be cross county appointments with activities on both sites and, subject to the candidate's skills and interest there will be opportunities to work in the community as well.

The successful candidate will participate equally in the departmental ward, hot and on call rota and will be able to develop another subspecialty interest, balanced with the needs of the department. Candidates with interests in interstitial lung disease and long-term ventilation would be particularly welcomed.

We are a large organisation providing acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. In collaboration with the other NHS Trust in Gloucestershire (Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust - GHCNHSFT - who provide physical health, mental health and learning disability services), we provide Oncology services across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and parts of Powys and Worcestershire.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • To assess and review patients and perform procedures as required
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To ensure timely and effective communication with primary care colleagues, including using the Trusts electronic discharge summary system.
  • To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call.

Education and Training:

  • To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of MMC and related requirements
  • To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme
  • To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, core trainees, SpRs, StRs and other staff as appropriate

Clinical Governance:

  • To undertake all work in accordance with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies
  • To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy

Teamwork:

  • To work within the framework of team decisions.
  • To take a whole systems approach to working with the wider hospital and health community
  • To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility

Accountability:

  • The post holder will be immediately accountable to the Specialty Director for Respiratory and Cardiology. Further line management is provided by the Chief of Service for medicine and subsequently the Medical Director.

  • Full GMC registration and a licence to practise
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General or Respiratory Medicine via CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR or European Community Rights

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Respiratory and G(I)M experience through most or all of training.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated additional experience and interest in thoracic malignancy, interstitial lung disease or ventilation
