Job summary

Diabetes Specialist Midwife, Band 7 (22.5 hours a week)

The post of Diabetes Specialist Midwife has been created in response to national reports and local drivers to provide high quality, standardised care for women who are experiencing complex pregnancies. The post presents an opportunity for a midwife to lead on the midwifery care of women who require specialist diabetes care in pregnancy. The midwife will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the service delivers high quality clinical care for women and pregnant people with diabetes in the outpatient, inpatient and community setting, assisting with the ongoing development of care pathways in line with national policy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination and oversight of the diabetes service within maternity. Together with the MDT they will develop and provide appropriate programmes of care for pregnant women who have diabetes. Education is a key aspect of this role and the post holder will be required to deliver training to support staff so that they are competent to provide care to women with diabetes. The post holder will also be required to work with the MDT to develop any plans to meet any national targets such as Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle (Volume 3).

Job description

Job responsibilities

- Demonstrate effective leadership and management skills and promote a proactive approach to diabetes care within maternity services.

- Be available as an expert in diabetes for midwives and junior doctors to ensure care provided within the Trust is effective and evidenced based to support safe practice.

- Act as a professional resource for the wider MDT and assist in the design and delivery of educational programmes and study days.

- Work closely with the diabetes MDT to provide clinics for women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes for further assessment, education and monitoring of their condition in line with evidence-based guidelines.

- Act as a point of contact to ensure that all women seen within the specialist clinics are seen in an appropriate timely manner with improved information provision.

- Hold professional accountability for managing a team of staff delivering high quality, caring and compassionate patient centred care through effective leadership and management and in partnership with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

- Build relationships and work closely with the patient safety and quality team and lead on investigations of diabetes in pregnancy incidents and share learning from incidents and changes in practice with staff.

- Provide public health information and advice to women regarding lifestyle choices e.g. smoking, diet, exercise, referring on to appropriate support services as required.

- Action referrals to specialist services e.g., retinopathy and regional maternal medicine centre when requested; ensure multi-agency records are complete.

- Liaise between obstetric staff, ward areas, paediatricians, NNU, laboratory staff, to plan delivery of high-risk pregnancies and care of babies.

- Promote multi-disciplinary team working, leading/liaising, communicating as necessary and supporting junior staff.

- Work in partnership with colleagues across the Directorate to provide both clinical leadership and develop standards to promote high quality practice.

- Create an environment of continuous quality improvement.

- Provide designated leadership and management responsibility for the dedicated diabetes specialist midwife role.

  • Registered Midwife with significant post-registration experience including substantial recent experience as a midwife
  • UK recognised Midwifery degree, or equivalent qualification
  • Evidence of further professional development
  • Post-registration qualification in diabetes management, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Completion of a leadership course, or equivalent relevant experience

Desirable

  • Masters, or evidence of postgraduate study
