Job summary

Oncology Practice Development Nurse, Band 6 (22.5 hours a week)

- To support the lead development nurse practitioner and existing practice development team with nurse education and the continual professional development of specialist training programmes within the Oncology Centre.

- To act as a resource for oncology and haematology registered nurses requiring specialist advice to support and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of high quality patient care.

Occasional weekends for open days and some flexibility in working pattern

Main duties of the job

- Induction and training of new staff

- Responsible for assisting with the on-going development, supervision and monitoring of all levels of Registered Nurses (RN) and Healthcare Assistants (HCA's) in the 4 departments.

- Competency training

- Clinical skills training

- Quality improvement and practice development via projects

The oncology practice development team is a small, highly functioning, friendly and professional group . We are very supportive of each other and the wider nursing teams. Education and development are our key provision and the new post holder will get plenty while they adjust to the role. Eventually however, this is a very autonomous and independent working environment. We are a passionate, driven team and strive to deliver projects, innovation and education to benefit the centre and patients. Research and policy is at the heart of that.

- Assist with the co-ordination of staff training to ensure a high professional standard in all aspects of cancer patient care.

- Ability to train students in clinical skills relevant to the specialty, e.g. Care of the CVC.

- Responsible for education programmes relating to specialist area such as the Oncology Haematology Update.

- Providing micro teaching sessions, group and one on one teaching and facilitation in the clinical departments.

- Contribute to the development of leaflets, protocols and guidelines, which will impact both in and outside of the area of practice.
