Job summary

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a new substantive consultant with a combined interest in Intensive Care and Respiratory Medicine.This post will be a cross county appointment with activities on both sites.

The Department of respiratory medicine has specialist clinics for sleep, ventilation, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, pleural disease, lung cancer, severe asthma, interstitial lung disease, and COPD. Bronchoscopy services have been consolidated at GRH. Close links exist with the thoracic surgical centres in Birmingham and Bristol, the Bristol interstitial lung disease MDT and the Birmingham severe asthma MDT. Endobronchial ultrasound and local anaesthetic thoracoscopy are provided on site.

Our Critical Care services are delivered across two units, one on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site and one on the Cheltenham General site.The two units admit approximately 1,500 patients a year. We support elective surgical services including Upper GI resection work, head and neck cancer services, three counties Gynae-Oncology services and a busy vascular unit. We have a busy medical admissions workload supporting all specialities including interventional cardiology, haematology, oncology, respiratory and renal medicine. We also support the emergency general surgical services and are one of the busiest centres for emergency laparotomies nationally.We have the greatest number of paediatric admissions outside of PICU in the South West.

Main duties of the job

The respiratory component of the job plan will include regular subspecialty and general respiratory outpatient clinics and a rotational contribution to the weekday respiratory departmental 'hot' rota, which provides 9-5 consultant support for respiratory patients attending ED, same day emergency care, inpatients under other specialties and GP advice via telephone and electronic advice and guidance. Development of a respiratory subspecialty interest will be supported, in particular there are opportunities for this within the domiciliary ventilation service.

The Critical Care component will also be split across both our sites with a slightly higher proportion of time spent supporting the Critical Care unit in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. You will be expected to support the running of the Critical Care units, work collaboratively with the MDT. You will be required to actively manage admission and discharges to and from the unit to support adequate flow.

Good leadership and decision making skills will be essential to facility daily work as will the ability to work calmly in periods of high stress.

About us

Resp DeptThe Department of respiratory medicine currently has twelve substantive consultants, 5 specialty registrars, 7 respiratory specialist nurses and 4 lung cancer nurses. We have a reputation for being a friendly, supportive and forward thinking department.

Critical Care DeptThe department has 18 Consultants who work collegiately together to provide comprehensive 24hr cover. The nursing team are led by a Matron and Deputy Matron with a highly functioning Senior Band 7 group of nurse. in total there are over 140 nurse working in Critical Care. We have excellent AHP staff and have developed a true MDT approach to our patients. We are proud of our flat heiracy when looking at the MDT working relationships.

In addition, the role is expected to support junior residents, ACCPs and Advance trainees working on the Critical Care units.

You will be encouraged to attend a number of MDT meetings that include weekly radiology and rehab meetings along with alternate monthly M+M and business meetings.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to further develop the already excellent working relationships with our Respiratory colleagues and also take a lead on updating and maintaining the Critical Care teams knowledge and expertise on respiratory based pathologies in our critically unwell patients. An interest in developing policies and protocols for management of conditions such as Severe Adult Respiratory Failure would be of benefit.
