Band 6 Haematology Nurse Specialist

Permanent position, 28 hours a week

(4 x 7 hours- week days, fixed shift pattern )

An exciting opportunity has arisen with the Haematology SpecialistNursing Team at Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust

We are looking for an enthusiastic , highly motivated , experienced nurse who is keen to take the next step and become a Nurse Specialist. The main focus of this role will be supporting patients with Lymphoma and includes supporting the autologous transplant team .

(Hospital based post, working on both sites)

Main duties of the job

In partnership with the senior specialist nursing team provide a quality specialist nursing service that meets the needs of patients in accordance with national and local policies and initiatives

Act as a Keyworker and provide support to patients with haematological cancer and their family/ carers attending Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucester Royal Hospital.

About us

You will be joining a multi skilled, dynamic workforce dedicated to high standards of care. We are a team of 4 CNS', 2 Nurse Specialists, and 3 cancer support workers providing specialist support to patients with haematological cancers in Gloucestershire.

We cover 2 hospital sites with our in-patient beds sitting in the Cancer Centre at Cheltenham General hospital and our Day Unit care being delivered at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

Job description

Job responsibilities

In partnership with the senior specialist nursing team provide a quality specialist nursing service that meets the needs of patients in accordance with national and local policies and initiatives

Act as a Keyworker and provide support to patients with haematological cancer and their family/carers attending Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucester Royal Hospital.

Knowledge and skills to include:

- 1st level Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery council

- Post registration experience including appropriate years within haemato-oncology

- Ability to work both independently and as part of the team

- Enhanced communication and interpersonal skills, with well-developed negotiation, decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution skills for patients suffering life threatening illness and those who may be imminently dying.

- IT skills, including the use of email, databases and word applications. Able to input and retrieve patient information from computer based systems.

- Meet patients at their first contact and provide support along the patient pathway.

- Provide an opportunity to follow up this meeting to further provide written and verbal information

- Provide support, education and advice to members of the multidisciplinary team

- Use specialist nursing skills to assess the patients physical, emotional and social needs.

- To have contact with patients and their relatives, who may be highly distressed and anxious, and use advanced communication skills to provide supportive listening and assess psychological needs, providing practical and emotional support

- Provide a telephone contact for patients, carers and health professionals.

- Work independently without direct supervision in an autonomous style.

- Assess patients symptoms and advise on interventions, refer to specialist practitioners as appropriate.

- With additional training deliver advanced clinical practice including bone marrow trephine and biopsy

  • Up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within Haematology

  • Ability to prioritise complex situations
  • The ability to lead and influence change
  • Ability to cope with emotional issues presented within the course of work and to support others
  • Flexibility, adaptability to meet needs of a changing service
