The care of the elderly team in Gloucestershire hospitals are recruiting for a Specialty doctor who is compassionate and motivated to delivering high standard of care for elderly and frail people of the county.
The department is an exciting place to work with opportunities to develop and improve care as well as build specialist skills. The team of consultants are supportive and encouraging of the development of Specialty and junior doctors.
The successful candidate will be expected to work alongside the consultant, provide decision making in the absence of a consultant and support the education of junior doctors and registrars. There will be many opportunities to get involved in wider work and development to ensure the service remains able to provide high quality care for the elderly population.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a Specialty to work within the Medical Division at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital in the Care of the Elderly.
This post offers excellent experience within an enthusiastic department working in different aspects of Geriatric medicine including the Frailty Assessment Service, Geriatric Medicine wards and Orthogeriatrics,.
This post would be ideal for post MRCP doctors who are confident working at middle grade level and are looking to expand their knowledge and experience in Care of the Elderly and Stroke Medicine, with opportunities for involvement in management & leadership, education & teaching, quality improvement & clinical audit. This broad range of experiences would be invaluable when applying for any future higher training. This post is being developed to help Specialty Doctors progress towards a Specialist Doctor or CESR.
About us
Cheltenham and Gloucester lie at the head of the Severn Estuary, midway between London and South Wales. Gloucester is an old Roman fortification and an historic cathedral city. Cheltenham is a large Regency town renowned for its music, literary and cricket festivals and for the 'Cheltenham Gold Cup'. Gloucestershire is well known for its cultural and leisure activities and has many excellent state and private schools as well as colleges of higher education and its own university (the University of Gloucestershire).
Both Cheltenham and Gloucester are close to the M5 motorway, providing easy access to Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham. Oxford lies 40 miles to the east on the A40.
Cheltenham and Gloucester are served by the Intercity network with easy access by train to Birmingham and the north and Bristol and the south west of the country. There is a direct Intercity service to London Paddington. The airports at Bristol and Birmingham are about an hour away and London Heathrow airport is less than 2 hours by road. There are regular buses connecting Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals.

The successful applicant will be based on one of our COTE wards. They will be expected to support the Consultant ward rounds, attend the daily board rounds and provide higher level medical support and patient review on the wards, or frailty unit. The candidate would also be expected to lead their own ward rounds independently, or with assistance from a junior member of the team. The candidate demonstrates will be allocated an experienced geriatrician to help achieve and document competencies to support career progression.
We expect the post holder to participate in ward based teaching with junior and MDT staff and actively encourage their engagement with e-portfolio and training opportunities.
Attendance at departmental specialty out-patient clinics would be expected. The post holder would also be part of the referral rota, seeing referrals from other medical and surgical specialties to give specialty COTE advice (with Consultant support and supervision where necessary).
This post would include participation in the medical registrar on-call rota, managing the unselected acute medical take.
Education and training
The introduction of the Gloucestershire Academy for University of Bristol medical students in 2004 means that our department provides learning opportunities including regular teaching sessions for year 4 medical students during their Year 4 Care of the Elderly/Primary care/Dermatology curriculum unit.
At GRH there is a weekly medical grand round in which all specialties and individual consultants are expected to participate.
