Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic GP with an interest in Microbiology / Infection (GPwSI) to be the first to join our current experienced team of Consultant Microbiologists. We have a range of experience across all major clinical infection scenarios and also expertise in diagnostics, infection control, research and teaching of virology, mycology and bacteriology.
This is a new post and represents the Department's enthusiasm for, and understanding that, diversification of our current workforce is key to providing a more dynamic and appropriate resource to manage the needs of the County's population. This post follows on from the recent approval for our first clinical scientist post, having been approved as a training centre for Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) in Microbiology training with our first ever candidate passing her FRCPath part 1 exam in Autumn 2022.
This role would be perfect for a GP looking to diversify and expand their clinical experience and understanding of infectious diseases and infection diagnostics.
Main duties of the job
As this is a brand-new role the exact duties will likely evolve with the post. In the first instance they are most likely to involve liaison with primary care through either telephone consultation, email or NHS advice and guidance services. In addition to this there will be an expectation that the successful candidate will help with authorisation of GP sample reports / results which may involve telephoning or emailing to appropriate practices within our patch.
We are looking for a candidate who is keen to learn, can adapt and help us to define the role and duties, hopefully even be involved in developing a training plan going forwards to ensure this post is maintained. We would hope any candidate would like working as part of a team, be reasonably flexible to dove-tail with work demands and be committed to the post.
About us
We are a close knit, but flexible team that work very well together. We meet regularly for clinical and management meetings and provide ad-hoc support as needed. We work between the two main GHNHSFT sites, with good office space available at both. Due to our work patterns, we will frequently move between sites to deliver our microbiology service. We have one main Laboratory at GRH with specimens form CGH and the community transported here for processing.
The Laboratory is lead by a very experienced Lab Manager supported by several senior scientists with various areas of expertise. They work very well together and the Lab maintains accreditation with UKAS, most recently passing in 2022.
We have a relaxed but professional approach to our work which ensures a good balance of clinical service work and opportunities for some personal interest work to be carried out too. We are also very fortunate to be working in such a beautiful area of the country as any local candidate will already be aware.
