Job summary

This post is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Dental Nurse to join a multidisciplinary team and support the specialty to ensure the provision of a high standard of patient care. This is an opportunity for you to develop and expand your skills as a Dental Nurse to the next level. You will be Specialising in Oral surgery, Head and Neck Cancers , Orthognathic, Alveolar, Implants, Cleft lip and Palate and Orthodontics. There is an opportunity for additional training and to gain enhanced skills and qualifications in radiography, sedation, ILS and oral health education. We also have career progression pathways within the department.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a Registered Dental Nurse interested in developing the service to our patients. We are seeking a highly motivated , enthusiastic and compassionate nurse with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to help us deliver outstanding treatment and care to our patients. You will be responsible for setting up and closing/cleaning down of you surgery and maintaining stock levels. Assisting clinicians in all clinics within our speciality. We are looking for someone who is a team player and will fit into our very busy friendly team. We would welcome any applications for this Band 4 Dental Nurse Role for those with relevant experience, including newly qualified Dental Nurses.

The applicant needs Active Registration with the General Dental Council (GDC ). Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional CPD.

We have 19 Registered Dental nurses , 2 Staff nurses, 1 TNA, 2 Healthcare assistants and our stores/admin support working within a very busy Outpatients department. The oral - Maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics department work with a multidisciplinary team which covers a variety of head and neck procedures, We also cover trauma and dressing clinics whilst working alongside other teams in the head and neck speciality. We also have dental Core Trainees in the department and a strong training ethos.

This is a cross-site speciality with all staff required to work at both Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. Free transport is provided for trust staff by shuttle-bus between the two sites. There may also be a requirement to work in Cirencester Hospital in the future on a regular basis.

Job Purpose

The post holder is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a safe working environment using measures to reduce cross infection as per Trust policy.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team, including giving of advice and information following procedures or relating to specialist conditions, including emotionally distressing situations.

To organise and provide chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics.

To act as a scrub nurse and assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, lasting up to an hour.

To organise, prepare and assist with specialist clinics e.g., Orthognatic, oncology, alveolar, cleft lip and palate.

Provide care, under supervision for patients with appearance altering conditions such as Cleft palate, facial cancers and facial trauma.

Prepare medical and orthodontic notes for clinics including obtaining investigation results from computerised systems e.g., MRI and CAT scans.

Obtaining prostheses from the maxilla-facial laboratory.

Responsible for recording and storage of patient study models of patients currently undergoing treatment

Work on either site as the workload demands and on the instruction of the nurse in charge. Take on responsibility for personal development and support the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge of Therapy practice

Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to less experiences/ non registered and new staff at all times

Work proactively to ensure that every patient attendance meets the patients expectations and needs with timely undertaking of procedure and effective communication with relatives, patients and carers.

Patient Care

To assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area.

Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, supporting the patient, family and other staff as required.

Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times

Professional Practice

Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed best practice

Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver and evidence based service.

With supervision and assistance take on increased responsibility recognising own limitations and seeking help appropriately

Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and PACS.

Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust

Adhere to the GDC code of practice at all times and operate within the GDC scope of professional practice.

Leadership and Management

Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.

Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.

Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.

Education and Training

Undertake all mandatory training.

Complete competencies associated with the role.

Maintain CPD required for registration
