Job summary

I am delighted to share this opportunity to join the Postgraduate Medical Education Faculty as SAS Advocate for Specialty and Associate Specialist Doctors. The Postholder will join an outstanding team and contribute to continuing development of Gloucestershire's reputation as a centre of training excellent.

This is a new Trust Strategic Role, to promote and improve support for the Health and Wellbeing of SAS Doctors at GHNHSFT.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide help and support and be a visible point of contact for SAS Doctors at GHNSHFT.
  • Work in collaboration with the SAS Tutor in promoting sustainable support to SAS Doctors.
  • Diligently signpost SAS Doctors to the relevant Departments, Colleagues or Information Portals within the Trust to provide support with personal Health and Wellbeing, including bullying and harassment.
  • Work with the Medical Executive Office and Director of Medical Education to address issues for SAS Doctors and ensure a consistent approach to SAS Doctors Health and Wellbeing is adopted across the Trust.
  • Act as a "Change Agent" utilising the principles of evidence-based practice sharing good practice across the Trust as per the SAS Reform Guidance.

SAS doctors are distinct from Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) who work in fixed term contracts for shorter periods of time. The SAS grade provides an opportunity for doctors to have career progression to the top of the grade over a number of years whilst gaining experience and developing their skills.

Job responsibilities

  • Work in collaboration with the SAS Tutor, Medical Workforce Team, Trust Health and Wellbeing 2020 Hub, Freedom to Speak Up Guardians, and LNC Chair, as appropriate
  • Collaborate with Post-Graduate Medical Education/Medical Staffing and the SAS Tutor to ensure that new SAS doctors are introduced to the SAS Advocate as part of their induction, and identify all SAS doctors working within the Trust, explaining the SAS Advocate Role and the different ways in which they can help and support
  • Research and collate information on the Trusts performance in supporting the HHHealth and Wellbeing of SAS Doctors, understanding the extent to which Health and Wellbeing Conversations and Career Conversations with SAS doctors are taking place
  • Review SAS Doctors access to Occupational Health Services, and review the Trust Data Intelligence on bullying and harassmen
  • Manage the SAS Doctors Forum in collaboration with the SAS Tutor, to enable SAS doctors to exchange suggestions, seek and offer advice, and discuss relevant topics
  • Ensure SAS Advocate Report is tabled for all Senior Trust Meetings
  • Engage and share best practice with Fellow SAS Advocates in other NHS Organisations for example, through a facilitated network
  • Be available to support and advise individual SAS doctors where required, complementary to existing structures, including signposting internally and to external organisation
