Job summary

Occupational therapists play a critical role in providing practical care and supporting recovery for those who struggle performing day-to-day tasks. Their role is powerful in using everyday activities to enable people to live independently, enjoy a good quality of life and reach their potential.

An apprenticeship in BSc (Hons) Applied Occupational Therapy Degree (Level 6) will enable you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) which is required to practice as a registered occupational therapist following completion of the apprenticeship. This is an exciting opportunity to learn the profession of occupational therapy whilst being paid to do so. We are looking for an enthusiastic and determined individual with a passion for providing holistic treatment and care to a range of individuals with a commitment to learning.

The Apprentice will be expected to complete the elements of the Occupational Therapy degree apprenticeship Level 6 over a 4-year time frame. Each year they will rotate to a different clinical team/area to gain knowledge and experience with multiple patient groups with varying medical conditions/disabilities to offer variety to their learning experience.

Main duties of the job

To work within the Therapy team providing an effective and evidence-based service through assessing, planning and implementing treatment programmes.

To deliver therapeutic interventions, using the principles of Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy in an integrated and client-centred way supported by the Therapy Competency Framework with guidance and supervision of your mentor.

To take on increasing responsibility for personal development and supporting the development and supervision of others by CPD (continuing professional development), linked to appraisal.

Apprentice Occupational Therapist:

Key roles and Responsibilities

1. To attend the University of the West of England and work placements as set out in training programme.

2. To attend academic training sessions provided by the educational institute. The programme aims to develop competent practitioners who can practice independently within the Therapy department.

3. To complete and pass appropriate academic modules to the required breadth and depth of underpinning knowledge

4. To gain practical understanding and experience over the whole range of occupational therapy theory and clinical practice.

5. Over the course of 4 years, the post holder will complete an undergraduate degree level course in Occupational Therapy.

6. To attend all mandatory components of the Apprenticeship Standard including:

- GHNHSFT mandatory training including those concerned with matters of safeguarding.

- Ward / Department based observations

- Competencies as determined by the line manager as relevant to the work area / department

- Regular progress review meetings face to face with the assessor

7. To develop and use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of treatment options; deliver, evaluate and amend the treatment plan with the support of your mentor and other experienced staff. This will include patients with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies in individual or group therapy sessions.

8. To be responsible for the organisation of own caseload and appropriately delegate to support workers or other staff members in order to ensure effective time management with guidance and support from your mentor and other more experienced staff. To assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area.

9. To communicate with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to aid effective patient care, which will include taking an active role in team meetings, joint treatment sessions, case conferences and specialist interest group meetings. Either working alone or as part of the multi-disciplinary team, to make recommendations for appropriate and timely discharge/transfer from hospital.

10. To consolidate and learn new skills and competencies to provide holistic care using the Therapy Competency Framework. To develop clinical reasoning and treatment techniques through the active participation in training and development. To consolidate knowledge and skills learned through this process with the direction of senior staff, and deliver research-based presentations as part of in-service training. This will involve facilitating own learning opportunities, reflecting on practice and learning through this process.

11. To participate in the supervision, caseload monitoring and clinical education of support workers, progressing to supervising less experienced staff with support of senior staff, as required. Providing support, guidance, training, and assessing and evaluating competence, in order to fulfil clinical governance requirements and retain a skilled workforce.

12. To maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with departmental and professional standards and include relevant outcome measures. This will include writing patient reports for e.g. medical practitioners and solicitors requests with support and guidance from your mentor.

13. To work with senior staff undertaking audit and research projects, to further own and teams clinical practice within each rotation. To be involved in making recommendations for changes to practice and procedures for the relevant clinical area, and the implementation of these changes.

14. To contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda by active participation in service initiatives, health and safety and risk management.

15. To comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times and demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT.
