Job summary

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a locum respiratory consultant to cover maternity. This role will to support the ongoing sustainability of Respiratory services in Gloucestershire, including supporting thoracic malignancy services and interstitial lung disease.

Respiratory medicine has been identified as the vanguard service for the Strategic Transformation Programme for Gloucestershire in recognition of the strong and dynamic links between the acute trust and the community-based integrated respiratory team. This post will be cross county appointments with activities on both sites and, subject to the candidate's skills and interest there will be opportunities to work in the community as well. The successful candidate will participate equally in the departmental ward, hot and on call rota and will be able to develop another subspecialty interest, balanced with the needs of the department. Candidates with interests in thoracic malignancy, interstitial lung disease, long term ventilation and severe asthma would be particularly welcomed. The role will also provide respiratory expertise to the acute medical team on a sessional basis, based in ambulatory care.

The post has been approved to work jointly, and equally, with the rest of the senior respiratory team in providing respiratory and acute medical services to the hospital.

The job plan consists of 10 PAs, of which 8.5 PAs are DCC and 1.5 are SPA. The job plan will be reviewed on a regular basis.

The Postholder, on a shared basis with ten consultant colleagues, will participate in a respiratory HOT rota, with that week (Monday to Friday) dedicated to acute respiratory work in the form of post take ward round, ambulatory care/HOT clinic reviews, HOT phone advice and ward referrals. We provide a specialist respiratory weekend and overnight on call service and there is also a small acute medical commitment, which results in an overall weekend frequency of 1 in 7. Weekend respiratory work consists of a respiratory post take ward round and a targeted ward round of the respiratory wards. The post holder will be responsible for the care of respiratory inpatients on a rotational basis (currently 1 in 4 weeks).

The postholder will be encouraged to develop a subspecialty interest, with opportunities for service development in integrated/community care, cancer and interstitial lung disease.
