Job summary
This post is the first Upper GI and robotic senior clinical fellowship of its kind in the country using the next generation Versius robotic platform. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain peri-CCT clinical experience in a busy Oesophago-Gastric cancer unit which has the largest experience on Versius in the United Kingdom and is leading the way in the development of upper GI robot-assisted surgery.
We have worked closely with the Versius team to develop a bespoke training pathway with continuous assessment of proficiency and access to state-of-the-art training and development materials.
We were the first unit in the country to acquire the Versius platform primarily for Upper GI work and have now completed nearly 200 cases including the first robot assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, complex hiatal hernia surgery, Heller's cardiomyotomy and adrenalectomy on Versius in the UK.
The post will be based mainly at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital/Cheltenham General Hospital.
The contract for this post will be held by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT).
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will attend regular operating sessions mainly focussing on robotic and advanced laparoscopic upper GI surgery. They will be trained in skills of increasing complexity under close supervision of the consultant team.
The Fellow will undergo a bespoke training pathway including online modules, simulator training and live operating.
Other clinical duties will include attendance at the cancer MDT, team meeting and MDT clinic.
The fellow will contribute to the emergency general surgery on-call work and will be expected to deliver a small amount of service commitment in the form of outpatients, endoscopy and/or theatre dependent on experience and appropriate accreditation.
It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the research portfolio of the unit with a focus on robotic surgery.
The Upper GI team in Gloucestershire is a cohesive and inclusive team, popular with trainees in the region for their support and the experience that can be gained in the Trust.
About us
The In-patient Upper GI Service is based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH). Outpatient and day case surgery are offered at Cheltenham General Hospital. Outpatient services are also provided at Stroud, the Vale and the Dilke.

Whilst working in the Upper GI team the postholder would be expected to work with F1s and registrars to manage ward patients, attend outpatient clinics and attend theatre for training and to assist, in addition to performing administrative tasks such as discharge summaries and participating in relevant audit and preparation for morbidity and mortality meetings.
