Job summary

The post of Lead Surgical Care Practitioner is an exciting new opportunity within the current Vascular team.

An experienced individual with enhanced levels of expertise as a Vascular Surgical care practitioner will find this post both exciting and rewarding as it enables leadership, clinical and mentoring skills to flourish whilst maintaining patient interaction.

The successful candidate will lead the current team of practitioners in supporting surgical activity within theatre.

You will participate and facilitate the education, training and development of other SCP's within speciality in theatre and out-patient environment.

The post holder will lead the current team of practitioners in the provision of outpatient clinic-based review of patients with vascular conditions.

You will have the opportunity to independently deliver venous intervention within your sphere of competence whilst supporting and training other SCPs and medical staff.

If you are successful you will be responsible for the supervision and maintenance of numerous databases, supporting the successful achievement of both local and national key performance indicators.

Main duties of the job

To lead team of vascular surgical care practitioners, managing own and team development to maintain level of advanced practice throughout service.

Demonstrate an advanced degree of knowledge, skill, manual dexterity and understanding in vascular surgery, providing a competent and efficient service within theatre and out-patient settings

Work autonomously examining and assessing peripheral vascular disease, making decisions about treatment, investigations and admission, follow up and discharge, referring on to vascular consultant colleagues when reached limit of own expertise.

Ability to read and interpret results and investigations and act accordinglyIndependent delivery of percutaneous intervention for superficial venous incompetence.

Qualified Independent Prescriber enabling prompt initiation of treatment in both out-patient and in-patient environments.

Oversee and manage databases and audits, including: National Vascular Register, Mortality and Morbidity, local operative database, HES, EVARLead and support team in quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation and research initiatives and disseminate evidence into routine practice.

Management of timetables to ensure comprehensive and equitable coverage of the service

Partake in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff

Alongside our regular theatres we are eagerly awaiting our new IGIS hub which is currently under construction, this will provide Gloucestershire Royal with two new interventional radiology suites, a hybrid theatre as well as cardiac catheter labs.

You will work alongside six vascular consultants, three surgical care practitioners, six advanced nurse practitioners, trainee and Trust grade registrars, core trainees and foundation year doctors as well as a team of experienced vascular scientists and leg ulcer nurse specialists.

Job responsibilities

The post of Lead Surgical Care Practitioner main purpose:

- Lead the current team of practitioners in the provision of outpatient clinic-based review of patients with suitable vascular conditions

- Provide independent opinion within the above environment

- Independent delivery of venous intervention, including training of SCP's/clinical members of staff

Main tasks

The post holder is expected to demonstrate an advanced degree of knowledge, skill, manual dexterity and understanding in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, providing a competent and efficient service.

To act as a first or second assistant in the operating theatre.

Clinical skills:

Pre and post operative visits

Consenting patients

Providing assistance in the operating theatre

Open and close wounds

Assist with haemostasis

Camera operate for minimally invasive procedures

Assist in IR theatre during endovascular procedures

Act as a formal link between surgical team and theatre personnel for co-ordination of theatre usage and effectiveness, on multiple sites.

Work autonomously examining and assessing peripheral vascular disease, making decisions about treatment, investigations and admission, follow up and discharge, referring on to vascular consultant colleagues when reached limit of own expertise.

To oversee and manage databases and audits, including: National Vascular Register, Mortality and Morbidity, local operative data base, HES, EVAR, to ensure relevant, up to date and prompt information is in-putted in a timely fashion and shared amongst the wider team facilitating governance of the service.

Leadership and management

Responsibility for the management and development of surgical care practitioners to ensure advanced level of service is maintained across the service

To work, influence and challenge across professional and multi-professional boundaries in order to ensure best practice and empowerment of patient and their carers.

Lead and support team in quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation and research initiatives and disseminate evidence into routine practice.

Education and training

Contribute and improve policy and practice by developing partnerships and networks on a strategic level in order to deliver local and, regional and national NHS objectives.

Participate in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff if necessary.
