Job summary

We are seeking motivated people who come from a pool of registered health care professionals who have a vested interest in Emergency Care.

Our new multi-million-pound emergency department opens soon and driven with this is new and innovative ways of working.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust houses two Emergency Departments based at Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucester Royal Hospital. We are a trauma unit, with a helipad and house multiple specialised surgical and medical services inclusive of hyperacute stroke unit (HASU), 24-hour PPCI, Vascular hub and specialised centre of three counties oncology.

Emergency Care can be a fast paced and demanding environment, but most will agree it is an exciting place to work and no day is ever the same. You will be supported by an established leadership team, in both medical and nursing workforce and will benefit from our practice development team who offer hand on clinical support and our varied in house and external courses.

For Paramedics and ODPs a shift may present you being allocated to our pit stop area, taking bloods and performing initial diagnostics; you maybe in one of our new resus rooms accepting a pre-alert call as part of a resuscitation team.

Main duties of the job

1. Highly visible, accessible, authoritative and influential figure on whom staff, patients, families and carers can rely, to ensure the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively and efficiently.

2. The post holder will be expected to perform initial and continued assessment of the unwell patient who presents with acute illness or injury and escalate accordingly within the department.

3. Provide clear clinical support for colleagues, working flexibly as a member of the Emergency department team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.

4. Deliver the outcomes and measures for patient safety as identified in the Trusts Quality Accounts.

5. Act as an expert clinical resource within the Emergency department utilising specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and practice experience.

6. Be visible and maintain responsibility for training delivery, ensuring that day to day delivery is timely and safe, supporting the organisation to meet the corporate agenda; for example, Care Quality Commission and legislation.

7. Be responsible for ensuring compliance with all RCN, RCEM recommendations and NMC and HCPC professional codes of practice both personally and for the nursing team.

8. Act as a role model for nurses within the department, promoting and demonstrating the standards of care expected. Contribute to nursing teams utilising shared governance to continuously improve standards.

  • Hold a registration with the NMC or HCPC with appropriate sub field (Adult, Children or Mental Health with NMC)
  • United Kingdom recognised Diploma, Foundation science degree or Degree in Nursing, Paramedic or OPD
