Job summary

Are you looking for some in or outpatient face to face or remote? Would you be interested in joined the bank to provide Inpatient or out patient support?

Have you knowledge in all areas of adult general inpatient/outpatient work. This should include nutrition support and gastroenterology. Can you work with patients requiring complex nutritional support in the in and outpatient setting. We are looking for a dietitian that can also work well in a team with the challenges or working remotely can think creatively and enjoys working on defined nutrition projects and quality improvement initiatives related to in and outpatient services.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be working in inpatients or outpatient clinic/clinics face to face remotely by telephone or attend anywhere.

You would use specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to assess, diagnose, agree, plan, implement and monitor a nutrition and dietetic care plan based on a range of treatment options for often complex outpatients, who have complex medical, nutritional and psychological needs.

Having advanced communication/behaviour change skills, motivational techniques, to negotiate with the patient the necessary changes to their diet which may be lifelong.

Able to empower the patient to control their symptoms and to ensure their nutrition requirements are met.

To be able to to treat patients with multifaceted dietary needs who may also have barriers to communication through social and emotional issues as well as cognitive or physical impairment e.g. dysphasia, deafness, blindness and depression, or who may not be able to accept a diagnosis or be prepared to change.

You would update and communicate on the patient's progress and changes to the treatment plans to the referrer.

Leadership and Management

To provide clinical supervision and support to staff in the nutrition & dietetic service, including students as required.

To support the Acute Team leads & fellow dietitians and management team in service planning, review, and evaluation to ensure a modern and clinically effective dietetic Acute service.

To support audits and service risk assessments as required.

To assist in recruitment to dietetic posts within the nutrition and dietetic service, particularly in Acute, including induction of new personnel as required.

To ensure activity, quality, audit, and other measures of performance are collected and reported to line manager, departmental service leads and any relevant clinical teams as appropriate.

Attend and contribute regularly to local and regional networking groups regarding the care of patients with Acute conditions

To attend and actively contribute to the nutrition & dietetic department and quality meetings

To actively contribute to the Acute dietetic teams compliance with the Trust and directorate policies, including health and safety and departmental policies. Identifying areas for development and review such as standards of nutritional care

Improving quality & developing practice

As a specialist inpatient dietitian, to provide expert opinion on appropriate practice and support in the development of the service. This includes reviewing current literature and disseminating the findings to other Acute dietitians, MDT ward rounds and nutrition & dietetic management team as required.

To use specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to assess, evaluate and implement a nutrition and dietetic care plan with monitoring, based on a range of treatment options for Acute patients with complex medical, nutritional and psychological needs.

To tailor the advice to the specific needs of individuals by using enhanced communication skills. The nutritional goals will be to optimise clinical outcomes for complex acute inpatients.

To use communication skills to overcome resistance to dietary change so that patients and/or carers are empowered with the knowledge and skills to meet nutritional needs and control symptoms. This includes patients with multifaceted dietary needs and/or with a range of complex social, physical impairments and psychological conditions.

To deliver nutritional education sessions to patients and healthcare staff as required

To act as an independent practitioner and be professionally and legally accountable and take responsibility for all aspects of this complex specialist area.

Through continual professional development, to develop and maintain a high level of evidence-based clinical knowledge in acute nutritional support. by undertaking clinical supervision, training, reflective practice and to evaluate ones own practice against the national & international guidelines/protocols.

Where an evidence base or current guideline does not exist, to inform practice by developing best practice guidelines for the directorate based on scientific literature, clinical experience and judgement and liaison with colleagues nationally.

To maintain clear and accurate patient information in department record cards, electronic record systems, including writing letters to outside medical referrers, in line with department and trust policies. To collect accurate patient information and statistics as per department standards.

To comply with all departmental, team, trust, national and professional policies and guidelines. To assist in the development and implementation of departmental and multi-disciplinary team policies, trust and national guidelines.

To be responsible for maintaining own CPD and competence to practise in line with HCPC guidelines

To actively participate in individual peer review (IPR)

Training and Education

To actively develop and participate in the training of dietitians and MDT in nutritional care for patients with Acute conditions within the organisation and outside.

Participate in the development and revision of an in-house training programme for dietitians

Acting as a role model, supporting clinical supervision with the Acute and wider dietetic team, and support other teams as required, undertaking tutorials, feedback and assessment

To develop and maintain evidence based educational material for patients and staff within the area of surgical dietetics

To keep up to date with developments in relevant research, thinking and resources by attending training courses, personal study, MDT ward rounds, regularly attending national and local conferences and presenting own work if required

Actively engage in BDA research symposiums and contribute to regional and national working groups and networks
