Job summary

SEPT 2023 Trainee Nursing Associate Programme, Band 3 (Min 30 hrs per week)

The Trainee Nursing Associate programme (also known as Nursing Associate apprenticeship) is a development role offered at Gloucestershire Hospitals. On completion, individuals work as a Registered Nursing Associates and or can progress onto an academic programme and train to be a Registered Nurse.

As a Trainee Nursing Associate, the post holder will work towards a Registered Nursing Associate (Band 4) post through the successful completion of the Nursing Associate apprenticeship standard, including the attainment of a Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship qualification. Over the two years, the apprentice will work at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and have placements across the wider healthcare community to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to support Registered Nurses and other healthcare practitioners.

Main duties of the job

- Evidence of recent learning

- Ability to work effectively as a team member under appropriate supervision, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team

- Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate

- Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in context of the team and the organisation and how the role may contribute to quality and service improvement

- Evidence of time management skills and ability to prioritise

- Intermediate IT skills

- Ability to communicate with members of the public and health and care providers

- Ability to deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of the workload and individual patient contact

- Ability to move between sites and to travel throughout Gloucestershire to a range of placements across our partner organisations

- Ability to work on own initiative

- Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical discussions

- Knowledge of when to seek advice and refer to a registered care professional

- Understanding of the importance of the promotion of health and wellbeing (Making Every Contact Count)

- Develop knowledge of the scope of practice of the Nursing Associate role within different care settings

- Develop and improve practical and theoretical knowledge, competence and skills throughout the Trainee Nursing Associate programme and maintain all evidence required

- Contribute towards developing a culture of learning and innovation

Clinical Responsibilities :

- Develop understanding of all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered nurse in the on-going assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care

- Support individuals with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centred care and promoting health and independence

- Perform and record clinical observations and undertake clinical tasks upon gaining competencies

- Plan and manage competing demands of job role, placement activities and academic assignments

- Deliver effective care following treatment plans determined by the Registered Nurse or registered care professional and provide feedback on progress against the plans

- Demonstrate good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures

- Demonstrate good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the Registered Nurse or registered care professional as required

- Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines both local and national

  • BTEC National Diploma/NVQ level 2 or 3 in a Healthcare related subject

Experience

Essential

  • Currently working as a Healthcare Assistant for the past 12 months (minimum), in a clinical Healthcare based setting
  • Up-to-date mandatory training
  • Holds relevant competencies for the role of Healthcare Assistant with a readiness to increase these skills within the scope of the Trainee Nursing Associate role
  • Previous experience of working in a team in a Healthcare based setting
