Job summary
This post is open to both Qualified Therapeutic Radiographers or students due to qualify in January 2023.
Gloucestershire Oncology Centre is a progressive Radiotherapy department with state of the art Varian machines delivering IMRT, Arcing and SABR techniques with adaptive therapy. We have a superficial and Brachytherapy unit.
The main department, of 4 Linacs, is based at Cheltenham General Hospital with a Satellite centre in Hereford, containing the 5th machine. Applicants will be required to undertake rotations at both sites.
The department is involved in numerous National research Trials and has two research Radiographers. We have Consultant Radiographers in both Breast and Prostate Cancer. There is also Radiographer- led planning. We treat over 3000 patients/year
The department prides itself in a very high standard of patient care and is currently developing a Late Effects Service to extend this care beyond initial treatment.
This is a permanent position.
Main duties of the job
Deliver an efficient, high quality, safe service for patients by carrying out advanced radiotherapy techniques and procedures.
Communicate compassionately and effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team
Actively participate in treatment volumetric verification, according to departmental policies and procedures
Use a range of communication and basic counselling skills to provide information and reassurance to cancer patients and their relatives in circumstances where they may be worried, distressed or confused.
Identify treatment side effects, offering reassurance and evidence-based advice and administer and supply medication under Patient Group Direction guidelines
Work within and contribute to keeping up to date the department's accredited Quality System
Develop and share knowledge and experience with other practitioners, student radiographersand other trainees. Be reflective in thinking and outlook
Participation in the rota covering the Satellite Unit
Rotate through the different areas of radiotherapy: pre-treatment and treatment

Job responsibilities
- Able to carry out a range of Radiotherapy procedures in accordance with Clinicians requirements, in a manner that meets professional and departmental standards
- To actively participate in treatment volumetric verification, according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Use a range of communication and basic counselling skills to provide information and reassurance to cancer patients and their relatives in circumstances where they may be worried, distressed or confused.
- Identify common treatment related side effects, offering reassurance and evidence-based advice, referring on to relevant Health care professions when necessary.
- To administer and supply medication under Patient Group Direction guidelines
- To adhere to all Trust policies and apply current Health and Safety policies, Kindness and respect policy, Radiation safety policies, Ionising Radiation Regulations and Local rules, Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations, Manual handling policies, Quality Assurance in Radiotherapy standards to maintain a safe working environment.
- To work effectively with other Health care Professionals as part of a Multi-disciplinary team, communicating accurate and timely information, providing the continuity of care that meets individual patients needs.
- To work within and contribute to keeping up to date the departments accredited Quality System.
- To ensure that Radiotherapy equipment is safe and accurate to operate, both during morning run up and throughout the day, reporting any equipment faults to senior staff immediately.
- To report any incidents or accidents to patients, staff or visitors to senior staff and complete the appropriate documentation.
- Share and develop knowledge and experience with other practitioners, student radiographers and other trainees. Be reflective in thinking and outlook.
- Participation in the staff rota covering the Centre and Satellite Unit.
- Participation in out of hours duties may be required to cover service needs, as well as participation in the departmental on call rota system.
- Arranging appointments for patients using computerised systems Trak & Aria
- Entering accurate patient data into computerised system Trak and Radiotherapy patient scheduling system (ARIA).
- To undertake bladder scans
- To undertake Obs (blood pressure and temperature) on patients
- Work in the Mould Room to assist with the making of masks for Head and Neck patients when required
- Rotation through the different areas of radiotherapy: pre-treatment and treatment.
