GLOUCESTERSHIRE HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent Specialty Doctor in Cellular Pathology to start 1st May 2022. This is an established 10 PA post for the Gloucestershire Laboratories based at Cheltenham General Hospital. The contract will be held by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Subspecialisation has been introduced amongst the medical staff within the department. This post will contribute to at least two from dermatopathology, gastrointestinal, urology, gynaecological, head and neck, haematopathology, breast and non-breast and non-gynaecological cytopathology.
Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The appointees will be managerially responsible to the Clinical Head of Department of the Gloucestershire Histopathology Department and through that person to the Specialty Director, the Director of Service, the Medical Director and the Trust Board. The current acting Head of Department for Histopathology is Dr Patricia Vergani, with subspeciality leadership provided as per the consultant list below. The Specialty Director is Dr Philippa Moore, and Divisional Chief of Service is Dr Kate Hellier. The management arrangements are consistent with the principles of clinical leadership and meet the current ISO15189 standards.
The appointee will be responsible of cut up, reporting under the supervision of Consultant colleagues and supporting Consultant colleagues with MDT attendance. We routinely work with expert practitioners in dissection dealing with small and large specimens and we are planning to change our diagnostic workflow using digital pathology for primary diagnosis. Development of appropriate sub-speciality interests will be encouraged and supported, particularly for those with an interest in urology, gastrointestinal, gynaecological pathology, breast and non-gynaecological cytopathology. The department has a strong record in gastrointestinal pathology teaching, hosting the Gloucestershire Gastro-intestinal Pathology Conference and we are a Cancer Centre for the County and neighbouring Trusts for these specialties

The appointee will be expected to contribute to a Consultant led service in Cellular Pathology in the following areas:
Diagnostic Histopathology The appointee will take an appropriate share in providing a Histopathological service to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and local Primary Care Trusts as agreed with the Head of Department. The appointee may be expected to participate in appropriate MDT meetings.
Work rotas and work allocation There is a variable weekly rota which takes into account the members of staff who will be available during the forthcoming week. The rota is divided by areas of histopathological sub-specialisation, cytopathology reporting and MDTs. Specimens received in the laboratory are divided into those broad category areas that relate to the subspeciality areas as listed above. BMS cut-up already occurs in skin, breast, gastro-intestinal, urology and gynaecological pathology. A sample rota is attached under Appendix 4. Workload is monitored based on RCPath P points and excess is dealt with under the departmental workload policy.
Equipment and facilities The appointee will be provided with a suitable microscope incorporating teaching facilities together with a PC and digital dictation equipment - the department uses the DigiDictate system which facilitates immediate typing of dictated reports. A Macropath system is used to support macroscopic specimen photography. The appointee will be provided with suitable accommodation within the laboratory and will have appropriate secretarial support. A project to implement voice recognition as part of re-configuration of pathology services is being considered.
Multi-headed microscopes are available within the department for teaching purposes. The immunostainers currently support a wide range of immunohistochemical markers. There are full intranet, internet and e-mail facilities. Electron microscopy, when required, is performed at North Bristol NHS Trust.
