Job summary
We are seeking applicants for a locum consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialist interest in hand & wrist trauma. This post is to cover maternity leave and is due to start in March 2023.
The appointee will be one of three orthopaedic hand surgeons and three upper limb surgeons in a department of 28 consultants. We are looking for a colleague who can help develop both elective and emergency hand surgery in Gloucestershire. He or she will work closely within the multi-disciplinary Gloucestershire Hand service including 6 hand therapists and services provided by the MSK Orthopaedic Practitioners. The Orthopaedic Department has undergone significant changes in recent years and this presents an opportunity for continued improvement for our hand surgery service.
Main duties of the job
As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:
- To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
- To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the Trust
- The appointment to this post has three main aims:
- To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based patient-centred management
- To strengthen the hand surgery provision in the county
To provide key support and input into the Trust's plans to develop Elective and Trauma services
About us
The Trust was established in April 2002 to provide acute hospital services for the whole of Gloucestershire.
The Trust currently manages two hospitals:
Gloucestershire Royal Hospital 580 plus 48 day beds (628), Cheltenham General Hospital 378 plus 33 day beds (411).
The Trust serves a population of around 560,000 for acute care and a population of over 750,000 for cancer. The Trauma and Orthopaedic on call service receives 5600 referrals per year and performs 3400 operations for trauma.
