Conditions, Fixed Term (15 months), £10,132 pa, £5.18 per hour

The Apprentice Healthcare Assistant position at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and training in an acute hospital.
This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare and gain a Healthcare Support Worker intermediate (level 2) Apprenticeship.
Main duties of the job
The apprentice will be required to:
- Undertake delegated work of the multidisciplinary team to assist in the provision of individualised planned patient care under indirect supervision
- Use a degree of initiative to ensure patient's personal needs are met, and the patient's condition is reported to qualified staff
- Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy environment, by ensuring orderliness and hygiene and safety of the ward/department
- Gain competencies in skills specific to the role and department.
The apprentice will be working towards assessments throughout the apprenticeship to complete the Healthcare Support Worker standard which includes:

To attend all mandatory components of the Apprenticeship Standard including
:- GHNHSFT mandatory training
- Apprenticeship webinars / workshops once a month delivered in our Education Centres
- Ward / Department based observations
- Competencies as determined by the line manager as relevant to the work area / department
- Regular progress review meetings face to face with the assessor
- Ability to get on well with people at all levels, communicate and work effectively as a team member
- Accept designated workload to assist the qualified nursing staff, observe and verbally report on the continual progress of the patient
- Ensure patient safety and assist them with their essential nursing and personal care needs including washing, dressing, drinking and help at meal times
- Communicate effectively with patients (especially where their ability to do so is compromised), relatives and visitors
- Have responsibility for personal development and complete the Healthcare Support Apprenticeship Standards within the time frame
- Adhere to Kindness and Respect Behaviours to project a professional appearance in behaviour and manner of dress and always be courteous when talking to colleagues, patients, their families and visitors on the ward
- Observe confidentiality and data protection at all times
- Assist the smooth running of the ward by carrying out other duties including unpacking stores, tidying and cleaning equipment
- Access and use of electronic patient record systems, intranet and email communications
- Understand and adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures
The job of Healthcare assistant is a physical one and successful apprentices will be expected to work a rotational shift pattern, including early mornings, evenings and weekend working.
Typical shift pattern may consist of:
Early: 07:15 - 15:15
Late: 13:15 - 21:15
Night: 20:45 - 07:45
Alternatively, some areas offer long days of working (over 18s only).
The maximum working week is 37.5 hours per week; each shift pattern includes an unpaid break of 30 minutes.
The young person (under 18 years) will have a break every 4.5 hours worked and have 2 consecutive days off. Under 18s will not be required to work nights.
