We are looking for a flexible and enthusiastic individual to take up a Locum Consultant Medical Retina post for 12 months commencing immediately.
The successful applicant will work within our innovative MR team and participate in improvement and expansion of our service. The ideal post holder will be able to work independently, it is essential that they are experienced in Medical Retina with the ability to work across disciplines. Experience in uveitis would be desirable.
This role offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the Ophthalmology department related to a substantial grant for the development and expansion of the medical retina service into the community, with improved access to both the VEGF service as well as newer virtual clinicalservices as well as expansion of the medical retina subspecialist services such as uveitis, choroidal melanoma/naevus clinics and neuroophthalmology.
The appointment will help the department achieve government and local targets in the provision of a high quality and comprehensive ophthalmic service to the population of Gloucestershire and beyond.
Main duties of the job
Any candidates should be an independent clinician with skills in diagnosis, imageinterpretation, fluorescein review for all general medical retina conditions. They should also have experience with laser treatment and intravitreal injections for retinal conditions.
Experience in uveitis would be of benefit but is not essential.
We work as part of a multidisciplinary team with lose links with trainee medical teams, optometry, orthoptics, imaging as well as nurse practitioners.

- sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
- conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
- maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division andthe Trust.
- Have a flexible approach to an ever changing and increasing demand inmedical retina rota/workload

To share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting to the Ophthalmology service.To provide a General Ophthalmology service for patients alongside the other members of the department.To provide a Surgical (if appropriate) and medical Retinal Ophthalmology service within the trust, in partnership with the rest of the Retinal team.To examine and treat such patients.To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff.To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols.

The appointee will also take a full role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including clinical meetings and tutorials. Medical students are currently taken from several universities, but the Clinical Academy based at the University of Bristol is expected to provide the majority of undergraduates in future.
Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
The department subscribes to a wide range of journals and there are good medical libraries at both Gloucester and Cheltenham with full literature search facilities. The department is part of a Trust wide intranet system and is wellserved for literature search and other internet functions.
Research The Consultant ophthalmologists participate in national research trials where appropriate and the majority of these trials are externally funded and include commercial studies. Ophthalmology also undertakes some local research projects.
Gloucester Trust has a well-established clinical trial unit with several medical retina clinical trials team. There is a dedicated clinical trials schedule which can be built into the timetable. The access for NHS patients to the clinical trialsperforms as part of the normal treatmentoptions for all eligible patients.
Audit and Clinical Governance (as agreedwith Specialty Director) To promote evidence based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments.To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topic.To be involved in risk management and quality assurance.To remain up to date and engaged in CPD as per RCOphth guidelines.To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.
Management (as agreed with SpecialtyDirector) To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs.To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department.To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary.To attend regional and national meetings as necessary.To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.

Strategic Development Ophthalmic surgical services are provided at Cheltenham General and Tewkesbury Hospitals.Outpatient services are delivered at 11 sites.Both the siting and style of service delivery are under constant review, and will change in coming years to deliver the services required by the community.
