Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required
Qualified Nurse, with current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, able to meet the revalidation requirements. Qualified Professional Nurse Advocate following a period of Masters level study. Project management and leadership experience Enhanced knowledge in policy development and developing reporting mechanisms Knowledge and membership of Shared Governance Councils Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the A-EQIP model to be able to support the nursing and midwifery team to identify their own personal action for quality improvement, undertake restorative clinical supervision and identify trends to report via governance routes Excellent organisational, time management, interpersonal and leadership skills. Enhanced knowledge of clinical governance, policy and procedure and quality assurance frameworks and how this role interfaces between these processes Demonstrate a clear understanding of Safeguarding policies and procedures Acts as a role model at all times to promote high standards of safe and effective care, which is based upon best evidence. Experience of developing and leading innovative and proactive methods of supporting and engaging with colleagues to aid staff feeling valued and actively encouraged to progress and develop.

Clinical Practice
The expectation is that, with adequate training, supervision and assessment, you will be able to;
Work collaboratively to develop and implement the Professional Nurse Advocacy strategy within GHNHSFT Develop and implement local PNA policy Develop systems to ensure the PNA workforce provider return is completed and returned Develop systems to support PNAs in debriefing/RCS sessions for themselves Develop the workforce plan regarding how PNAs can carry out this role Utilise knowledge in nursing and midwifery practice to support the Divisional Directors of Nursing in implementing and monitoring high quality nursing and midwifery practices with the aim of improving nurse satisfaction, and reducing the risk of harm. Develop personal and professional strategies in self and others to support the wider workforce. Develop how nurses across the organisation can access the Professional Nurse Advocacy team, on a planned appointment basis, either face to face, or in a virtual space, on a 1-1 or group basis, and participate with providing this to the nursing workforce. Use effective communication strategies and influencing skills to achieve desired outcomes and make appropriate referrals for advocacy, mediation or arbitration Support nurses and midwives to work in a person centred way with patients, carers and families, developing plans of care which meet individual needs and facilitates professionals to listen and advocate for them as required. Deliver Restorative Clinical Supervision (RCS) individually and in group sessions, supporting trainee PNAs Support nurses and midwives in continuous professional development by maintaining their knowledge and skills and be adequately prepared for professional revalidation Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and Trak-Care Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust Adhere to the NMC code of practice at all times and operate within the NMC standards of proficiency for Registered Nurses and Midwives Develop outcome measures, and lead the recording and reporting of the themes identified, enabling prompt action to address issues arising within our workforce. Lead and participate in audits, and undertake local research relevant to area of practice. To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct To deliver and receive information, which may cause emotional distress to all parties. Demonstrate excellent time management skills and prioritising Insight into own skills and knowledge and know when to signpost or ask for advice Keep up to date with own skills and changes to clinical practices, both locally, nationally and internationally Excellent IT skills Participation within shared governance councils Confidence in addressing poor practice and lack of engagement, and leads other advocates in developing these skills Awareness of fairness, equality and diversity
Leadership and management Using a collective leadership framework, develop the PNA strategy and implementation, Develop a database to monitor all activities that each of the advocate undertakes to accurately reflect the provider workforce return Develop an effective communication strategy that ensures all PNAs are kept informed of current issues so that the A-EQUIP model is implemented Work with other stakeholders including, but not limited to, Governance, Quality Improvement Academy, Lead Nurse for Recruitment, Retention and Attraction and the Well-being hub. Develop the mechanisms to provide reports for Quality and Performance and ways in which to contribute to nurse satisfaction data Maintain the quality and integrity of the service, reporting on themes, risks and challenges in the development of our nursing colleagues Inform the reporting lead if any of the team are experiencing challenges or concerns about carrying out the role of the advocate and work collaboratively to decide on an appropriate plan of support to assist the PNA. Monitor whether the plan has been effective. Act as a role model by applying best practice in motivating staff to drive improvements and provide visible leadership in the workplace Act as a role model by applying continuous personal improvement by using positive learning approaches and encourage others to adopt this culture Contribute to service development using quality improvement methodology and lead on implementing how nurses at a local level can be supported to implement improvements Contribute/lead multi-professional meetings/team debriefs and advocate as required on behalf of nurses and midwives in order to ensure that high standards of clinical care are aspired to and thus maintained Lead as required on any projects to improve the quality of care Ability to work under pressure and maintain good clinical judgement at all times Ensure that the Trusts behaviour standards are maintained at all times. Provide support and mentoring for new PNAs as they go through the transition period adapting to the new role. Work alongside the Practice Development Team/Trustwide Clinical Educators and contribute to the learning of student nurses as the role develops Develop robust contacting arrangements to ensure effective booking and delivery of restorative supervision sessions, including a communication plan Evaluate and share the positive process of AEQUIP and act on behalf of the organisation in showcasing the work that has been done at local, national and international network events. Work independently and autonomously driving the new model forward, collecting metrics and outcome measures Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters. Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required. Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead staff. Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed. Use appropriate strategies to support nurses and midwives to maximise their potential in practice, implementing the principles of restorative clinical supervision
Education and training Develop strategies to support the education and development of student nurses to ensure that they understand the role of the Professional Nurse Advocate and provide space for them to experience group reflection on practice Be actively involved in, arrange and deliver departmental education programmes and quality assure the robustness of this training Mentor, support and educate registered staff in the clinical practice setting Undertake all mandatory training Engage in national and international discussions, keeping up date with PNA programmes of delivery, maintain competence in self and others in delivering the
