Responsible and accountable to: Principal Respiratory Clinical Physiologist
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to complete a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Healthcare Science, specialising in the Respiratory & Sleep Physiology pathway at GHNHSFT.
To work as a member of the Respiratory Physiologist team and the Community Diagnostic Hub, undertaking basic diagnostic testing where you'll need to implement and progress treatment plans within agreed protocols.
To support the physiology team with administration, clerical and housekeeping duties.
The successful applicant will be expected to complete the elements of the Healthcare Science Practitioner (Respiratory Physiology) Apprenticeship Level 4 over a 2 year timeframe, starting in March 2022. This will be fully funded by the Trust.
Applicants are required to have GCSE's at Grade C/4 in Mathematics and English and be 18+ years old. No previous experience in the role is required and all necessary training will be delivered. The successful applicant will have 80% on the job training and 20% off-the-job distance learning delivered by CSR Group.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be working within the Physiology Team, performing a variety of diagnostic respiratory and sleep investigations.
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with an interest in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine to join our dedicated team.
You will need to know how to input data accurately and have a good level of understanding on how to use computer programmes such as excel and word.
The role involves working as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team and has a high level of patient contact.
The post holder will need to complement our service values, requiring them to be kind natured, hardworking and a positive individual.
About us
The Lung function service is comprised of Respiratory Physiologists, Practitioners and Administrative staff. Trained members of staff perform diagnostic testing and treatment assessments for people with respiratory and sleep conditions. While our administrative staff book appointments, handle patient queries and escalate issues to the trained team.
We are currently working at Gloucester Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital, as well as expanding our service to the new Community Diagnostic Hub located at Quayside House, Gloucester.
Many of our staff enjoy working full-time over a 4-day week; flexible working options are available.

To obtain fingertip blood samples for haemoglobin measurements and apply the correction to gas exchange results.
To identify potential problems, complications and contraindications, knowing when to refer back for assessment by a qualified Physiologist.
To use clinical reasoning skills to agree functional goals and develop and evaluate the treatment plan. To implement and progress treatment programmes in order to promote physical/functional independence. To include the instructing of patients on how to undertake diagnostic tests, as well as being fully competent in the issuing of equipment.
Lead, educate and encourage patients in required test techniques, explaining the need for full co-operation and maximum effort in performing these tests by demonstrating the same physical effort and enthusiasm.
To use verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers.
To work with members of the Multidisciplinary team.
Draw on theoretical knowledge and practical experience to decide on the most appropriate course of action. Assess each patient in terms of the appropriateness/ potential risks of performing the requested tests and acting accordingly.
