Job summary
This is a substantive post starting as soon as possible where the successful candidate will join an ambitious department of 7 upper GI consultants to provide general and specialist upper GI care to the population of Gloucestershire and beyond.
This post would be for a new colleague to join the department's cancer resection team.
The in-patient Upper GI Service is based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) alongside day-case and outpatient facilities. Outpatient and day case surgery are also offered at Cheltenham. Outpatient services are also provided at Stroud, Dilke, and the Vale. All specialist Upper GI in-patient and day care is provided on dedicated wards at GRH (Ward 5B / Mayhill Unit). Emergency surgery is provided on ward 5A. In addition, benign upper GI in a day case capacity in Cheltenham.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of this post is to support and further develop the general upper GI service for the residents of Gloucestershire. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-
- To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
To attend the Worcestershire Upper GI Cancer MDT and provide local outpatient care of patients in Worcestershire.
To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the Trust

- Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service (with opportunity to develop/acquire further specialist endoscopy skills
- MDT attendance.

- To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests. Appropriate additional duties would be incorporated into the post-holders job-plan after initial job-plan review.
- To contribute to the ongoing reconfiguration of GI and emergency general surgery in Gloucestershire.
