Main duties of the job

As Director of Quality and Chief Nurse you will be a pivotal member of the executive team and a voting member of the Trust Board. You will be instrumental in leading the exciting work described above to ensure we are at the vanguard of professional nursing and therapy practice, and achieve our ambition of being awarded Magnet Hospital status. You will recognise the value of partnership working and have achieved success in system working.

The post holder is the professional lead for nursing, midwifery and allied health professions working within the organisation and has executive responsibility for infection prevention and control, safeguarding of adults and children, volunteer services and spiritual services throughout the Trust. The post holder is the strategic lead for carers, mental health, learning disability, children's, maternity and older people's services.

Leadership and Assurance

  1. Embed, and visibly role model through personal action and communication, the Trusts values at all times to ensure patients and staff receive exceptional and compassionate care, every day, in support of our Vision of Best Care for Everyone.
  1. Lead the implementation of Pathway to Excellence Programme and the Magnet 4 Europe research programme. A key component of the programme is our growing approach to shared professional decision making, which the Executive Director iof Quality and Chief Nurse will professional lead.
  1. Ensure compliance with all relevant statutory guidance, Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) professional standards including mandatory validation requirements.
  1. As a Board Director, be collectively responsible for the direction and performance of the Trust and for the decisions made by the Trust Board. Working with Director colleagues lead the development and maintain systems of quality governance which ensure the Trust places quality at the heart of the organisation.
  1. Provide executive leadership and strategic direction on all aspects of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional policy and practice.
  1. Ensure nurse, midwifery and allied health professional staffing levels and skills are compliant with national requirements and support the delivery of high quality care including overseeing the effective delivery of relevant rotas and roster systems.
  1. Provide the Board and its members with professional advice on policy and practice for nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals.
  1. Provide professional and operational leadership for Trusts volunteer workforce ensuring they are appropriately trained and deployed commensurate with their role.
  1. Act as the professional voice for nurses, midwives and allied health professions within the Trust Board and Trust leadership team.
  1. Support the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Council to ensure that professionals are included in the business of the Trust and regularly appraised of issues that are likely to affect them or their services.
  1. Act as the point of executive contact with the Care Quality Commission and commissioners on matters relating to the quality of the Trusts services. Executive lead for planning and execution of all CQC inspections.
  1. Represent the Trust as required on external business, acting as a positive ambassador for the Trust whenever the opportunity presents.

  1. Contribute to the development of an organisational culture conducive to the consistent delivery of high quality care and specifically provide leadership to the patient experience agenda with the aim of consistently exceeding our patients (and their families) expectations of care.

Work closely with the Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer to ensure that the Trust has a comprehensive and progressive quality strategy for the development and delivery of its services and that the systems of internal control, that ensure the Trust consistently delivers on its vision of Best care For Everyone, are established and working effectively from ward to Board.
  1. Ensure that professional nursing, midwifery and allied health professional standards are maintained with particular reference to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice, Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Health and Care Professionals Council requirements and the requirements of the Trust.
  1. To take joint lead, with the Director of Safety & Medical Director, for the operational responsibility of clinical governance activities across the Trust. Act as the Executive lead for quality governance across the Trust.
  1. Working closely with the Medical Director, set professional standards for the delivery of patient care and ensure adherence to clinical policies and procedures at all levels within the organisation.
  1. Lead deep-dive, check-and-challenge review of nursing. Midwifery and AHP plans, projects and operations to ensure that they are sound and that any risks are understood and mitigated. Ensure that cross-Divisional interdependencies and critical success factors are properly taken into account in the planning or programmes and projects.
  1. Promote and positively support the Raising Concerns agenda ensuring that all concerns raised are fully and fairly investigated in line with Trust policies and procedures.

Management and Education

  1. Work very closely with the Divisional Chiefs of Service to ensure effective leadership, support and development of the Divisional Directors of Quality and Nursing for all aspects of their role including the undertaking regular performance reviews with Chiefs of Service.
  1. Lead and monitor nurses education, training and research and liaise with external parties to influence the development of nursing policies and practice.
  1. Support the redesign of the workforce and roles to ensure that GHFT has the requisite workforce to achieve its strategic priorities. Advise the Trust Board of Directors on issues of skill mix, deployment and utilisation of the nursing and midwifery workforce consistent with National Standards.
  1. Ensure appraisal, preceptorship and clinical supervision processes are developed and implemented across the Trust for nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals.
