Job summary
This is a substantive post for a Consultant in Critical Care. It is a full time post to cover sessions made available as a result of job plan changes in the department.
It is based around a 1 in 8 on call with daytime sessions in critical care and paired specialty making a 10PA contract. We would welcome applications from single ICM or appropriate paired specialty. Sessions will be decided upon consultation with the speciality director.
The successful applicant will join the existing team of 65 consultants working for the trust in the two main sites of Gloucester and Cheltenham, and peripheral community hospitals.
As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other, clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will join a cohesive and enthusiastic department of over 68 Consultants, 50 junior doctors and 20 SAS doctors providing a full range of elective and emergency anaesthetic services delivered across the Trust's two acute sites (Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals) as well as the county's smaller peripheral hospitals.
Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides specialist services including upper & lower GI surgery, vascular surgery, trauma, renal medicine/haemodialysis, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, paediatric oncology, neurology, rheumatology, dermatology, maxillo-facial surgery and ENT.
Cheltenham General Hospital specialises in lower GI surgery, gastroenterology, urology (incl robotic surgery), ophthalmology, gynaecological cancer surgery as well as interventional radiology and cardiology. It is the haematology/oncology cancer centre for three counties.

The post holder will provide:
- Undertake consultant cover for weekdays, nights and weekends for critical care as part of the 1 in 8 rota.
- If dual application - additional sessions in supporting dual CCT specialty, sharing responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting to our hospitals.
- On call duties will have to be undertaken on both the Gloucester or Cheltenham sites.
- Support for the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff.
Teaching and training
- As part of the Severn deanery, we have a large number of trainees working within the department at from novices to ST7s. we have an active local and regional teaching programme.
- To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme. The Department is involved in teaching medical students from Bristol, as the Trust achieved Academy status in 2004. Fourth year students are placed in the Department and participate in a structured teaching program.
- The anaesthetic department has a close relationship with the Paramedic Training School and the local ambulance service and paramedics regularly undertake attachments.
Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and SAS medical staff, being responsible for theirappraisal and personal development planning.
Continuing professional development
- We recognise the importance of continuing medical education and actively encourage our consultant team to prioritise professional development. You will undertake CME / CPD as per College recommendations. A mentoring scheme for new consultant staff is well established and each new appointee will be appointed a mentor shortly after appointment.
- You will be encouraged to be active in clinical research.
- We have a well-established framework for clinical governance that incorporates the clinical audit program. A wide variety of audits are undertaken within the Department. Clinical Governance meetings are regular. The post-holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit activities within the department and achieving clinical governance objectives in accordance with the agreed Divisional and Trust clinical governance programs.
