Job Title: Apprentice Respiratory Clinical Physiologist
Hours: 37.5 hours per week to work flexibly between Monday to Friday
Contract: Annex 21 (70% of Band 5 whilst training) 3 yr fixed term contract
Department/Area: Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Department
Responsible and accountable to: Principal Respiratory Clinical Physiologist
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to complete a BSc (Hons) Degree Apprenticeship in Healthcare Science, Respiratory Physiology with GHNHSFT. Once completed you will be enabled to register as a Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist.
Main duties of the job
To work as a member of the Respiratory Physiologist team undertaking basic diagnostic testing and implementing and progressing treatment protocols/plans within agreed limitations.
To support the physiology team with administration, clerical and housekeeping duties. The Apprentice will be expected to complete the elements of the Healthcare Science Practitioner (Respiratory Physiology) apprenticeship Level 6 over a 3 year timeframe.
About us
The Lung function service is provided by a team of respiratory physiologists, practitioners and administrative staff who perform diagnostic testing and treatment assessments for people with respiratory and sleep diseases. We work at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital.

To undertake basic respiratory and sleep assessments, including full explanation to the patient of the tests carried out & their purpose
To identify problems, potential complications and contraindications and refer back for assessment by a qualified Physiologist when necessary.
To use clinical reasoning skills to agree functional goals and develop and evaluate the treatment plan. Lead, educate and encourage patients in required test techniques, explaining the need for full co-operation and maximum effort in performing these tests by demonstrating the same physical effort and enthusiasm.
To use verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers.
Draw on theoretical knowledge and practical experience to decide on the most appropriate course of action.
Assess each patient in terms of the appropriateness/ potential risks of performing the requested tests and acting accordingly.

- A-level: Grade C or above in Chemistry or Biology, and a pass in another science subject.
- Equivalent qualifications or professional experience may also be accepted.
