Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology - as soon as possible for 6 months

Applications are invited for this Locum Consultant post in the Gastroenterology Department in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join a team of 14 Gastroenterology and Hepatology Consultants who provide a general and gastroenterology service to the population of Gloucestershire. An interest in IBD and endoscopy would be valued. Gloucestershire has a longstanding regional endoscopy training centre with a national and international reputation and has recently been made a Regional Endoscopy Academy for the South West.

Main duties of the job

The appointment to this post has five main aims:

  • To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of gastroenterology and hepatology patients
  • To contribute to IP care of gastroenterology and hepatology patients
  • To contribute to general and specialist gastroenterology clinics
  • To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to a Consultant-led service

  • To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary
  • To attend regional and national meetings as necessary
  • To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies

About us

The places of work for this post are Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. Other work locations, including off site working, may be agreed in the post-holders Job Plan where appropriate. The on-call commitment will be delivered at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Most of the established consultants do provide some service at one of our peripheral community hospitals. The post-holder will generally be expected to undertake their Programmed Activities at the principal place of work or other locations agreed in the Job Plan. Exceptions will include travelling between work sites and attending official meetings away from the workplace. You may be required to work at any site within the Trust.

Job responsibilities

PURPOSE OF THE POST & GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The purpose of this post is to augment and support the general gastroenterology service for the residents of Gloucestershire. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts and Divisions services plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Trust

SPECIFIC AIMS & RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POST

The appointment to this post has five main aims:

  • To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of gastroenterology and hepatology patients
  • To contribute to IP care of gastroenterology and hepatology patients
  • To contribute to general and specialist gastroenterology clinics
  • To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to a Consultant-led service.

Clinical
  • The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Department
  • To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Department
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To carry out ward rounds, OP clinics and endoscopy
Teaching/Training (as agreed with Service Line Director)
  • To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations.
  • To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
  • To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, SpRs, STs and other staff as appropriate
  • Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
Audit (as agreed with Service Line Director)
    • To promote evidence based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments
    • To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics
    • To be involved in risk management and quality assurance
    • To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCP guidelines
    • To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents
  • The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.
Research

There are ample opportunities to pursue academic and clinical research in gastroenterology through the Trusts link with several Universities. Any other research interest will be actively supported by the Upper GI department.Clinical Governance

  • To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements

  • To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs

  • To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary
  • To attend regional and national meetings as necessary
  • To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies

Accountability
