Job responsibilities
1. Strategic development
Develop a shared understanding of, and commitment to, the vision and strategic aims of the AHP services within the Trust, working with the Trust Board, staff and associated external bodies.
In collaboration with the Director of Quality and Chief Nurse, be responsible for the development and delivery of the Professional Excellence Programme for AHPs across the Trust.
Responsible for the development of a positive public image of the Trust AHP services through clear communication of the objectives, successes and constraints.
Ensure that AHP services are planned, developed and monitored in line with current and projected priorities, Trusts strategic direction and commissioning priorities.
Play a key role in the determination and implementation of AHP services working in partnership with external stakeholders and networks, commissioners and across the ICS.
Respond to national and local initiatives, innovations and policy developments within a robust monitored governance framework. Influence local, regional and national policy and guidance and apply it as appropriate.
Undertake strategic service planning and ensure that the contribution, as appropriate, of AHP services is included in all new business.
Drive the AHPs strategic development and innovation/service transformation in line with best practice, seeking collaborating with stakeholders and external agencies and always within a multidisciplinary context.
Participate and provide leadership for AHPs as appropriate on the patient and public involvement strategy for all patients.
Lead on behalf of the Director of Quality and Chief Nurse the development of the AHP education framework and the development of the AHP workforce plan in line with the training needs analysis and monitor the impact of the investment.
Lead on behalf of the Director of Quality and Chief Nurse the non-medical education commissioning and monitoring for the non-medical workforce.
Responsible for working in partnership with HEIs, ensuring that AHP training and clinical placements provided to students are of a high standard and are appropriate.
2. Professional Leadership and Practice Standards
Demonstrate strong clinical leadership to the AHP professions across the Trust, providing senior advice and problem solving with a creative approach ensuring that all registered AHP practitioners work within their professional code of conduct.
Provide effective, visible leadership and professional leadership to AHPs and across the organisation, advocating for and promoting AHP services in achieving Trust objectives
Represent AHPs at Trust Board and with the Executive team when required
The post holder will be responsible for developing and implementing standards across the Trust which support professional development and leadership, competence, capacity and standards of conduct directly leading to high quality, efficient patient care for all AHP professions (as defined by the HCPC), with a specific focus on dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech and language therapy, operating department practitioners, orthoptics and both branches of radiography, diagnostic and therapy.
Chair the organisation AHP Leadership Council ensuring the voice of AHPs is visible and heard.
Encourage a philosophy of continuous professional development amongst colleagues, leading by example, work in collaboration and partnership with all health care professionals, continually promoting inter-professional working.
Lead on AHP workforce plan to determine the correct level of staffing to meet patient safety and quality requirements, activity levels and innovative service delivery. Working with senior multidisciplinary clinical leaders to ensure the best multidisciplinary workforce model. Lead on annual safer staffing review for AHPs groups and Job Planning for AHPs.
Promote succession planning and talent management for senior AHP roles
Creatively work with multi-disciplinary colleagues in developing a retention strategy that addresses the key issues of turnover and staff satisfaction at work.
Provide advice and act as a conduit for AHP views to the Trust Leadership Team to ensure that strategic and policy decisions are well informed by AHP staff at all levels.
Provide expert advice to the Director of Quality and Chief Nurse on all matters affecting AHPs and ensure that the Director of Quality and Chief Nurse is briefed on key risks and issues.
Provide professional leadership and support to the AHP staff group, the Executive and the Board regarding the identification and maintenance of professional and service standards and clinical governance requirements. Disseminate and share best practice at local, regional and national level.
Represent the Trust as appropriate on external groups relating to the AHP workforce or activities.
Be a visible leader engaging personally and regularly with a range of staff and patients to foster a patient-centred approach to delivery of care by AHPs, acting as a role model always demonstrating professional standards and Trust values.
Maintain and enhance relationships with relevant Trade Unions.
Lead on HCPC fitness to practice processes for the Trust.
Provide professional advice for CIP, business cases and service improvement programmes relating to AHPs.
Provide effective leadership for the development and implementation of information technology systems e.g. electronic patient records, reporting systems or alternative digital solutions across the Trust for AHPs.
Provide strategic and operational leadership for Nutrition and Hydration with the Trust, chair the Trust operational group.
Provide leadership to ensure continuous learning through sharing and embedding change from incidents.
Provide leadership for risk management across portfolio.
3. Quality, Safety, Research and Service Improvement
Lead on the implementation of the AHP quality agenda, safety improvement and clinical risk management initiatives ensuring that the trust is seen as an international exemplar in delivery and innovation of these areas.
Play a key role in the development of AHP services across the Trust with the objective of improving the quality of patient care, reducing unnecessary admissions/readmissions, and improving discharges and length of stay
In partnership with divisions, support service modernisation, AHP workforce and workload planning, AHP education, research, training and development and quality of AHP interventions in relation to professional standards and health care governance in general.
Deliver continuous improvement in the outcomes for patients in relation to their experience of care and services provided by the Trust. Professionally lead clinicians and managers to ensure a Trust-wide approach to the planning and staffing of services, ensuring excellent standards of care for all patients in both specialist and general areas.
Support and inspire staff towards continuous quality improvement and the delivery of patient focussed care engaging with Trust quality improvement methodology.
Through the quality assurance process contribute to the analysis of quality information and triangulation of metrics to help to target issues effectively and efficiently.
Lead the development and oversight of quality metrics and review of Model hospital for benchmarking.
Co-design and co-develop services with service users to improve patient experience and outcomes. Capture and analyse patient feedback through a variety of means, including the involvement of patient representatives, ensuring that patients views are included in the decision-making process for services developments across the Trust.
Promote the research and development agenda with the AHP workforce to support implementation of the Trusts Research and Development Strategy and support the aim to achieve university hospital status.
Encourage AHPs to lead and be involved with research, support all staff in delivering/leading research programmes.
Support staff to use evidence from research to inform areas of clinical care
Have oversight of research activity amongst AHPs.
Contribute to the implementation of the NHS 10-year plan, and lead on implementation of relevant National Service Frameworks, NICE guidance, AHPs into action and other relevant national and local policies for AHP services.
The post holder will support Divisions with service re-design and service development opportunities with options for professional practice and new ways of working.
