This job is now closed

Job summary

We wish to appoint new consultant colleagues to join our expanding Care of the Elderly (COTE) service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). Applications from ST7s and established consultants are equally welcome.

We are one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England with a sufficiently large and diverse workforce of healthcare professionals to encourage sub-specialisation interests. We provide a full range of acute, sub-acute and chronic disease management services closely integrated with our colleagues in our other secondary care Trusts. The main hub of our department is currently based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital although we also provide a full consultant led service at Cheltenham General Hospital. We also provide services to the whole of the county of Gloucestershire.

Main duties of the job

Core to this post is:

  • the early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of the frail elderly presenting as emergencies to our acute hospitals;
  • the development and support of the Frailty Assessment Service and our Frailty Unit; and,
  • a desire to increase the provision of general elderly care medicine within our trust and across the county of Gloucestershire.

About us

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust (GHNHSFT) was formed in April 2002 and became a second wave Foundation Trust in July 2004. We are a large organisation providing acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. In collaboration with the other NHS Trust in Gloucestershire, we provide COTE services across our County of 1,220 square miles. Our population is c. 640,000 with an annual year on year growth rate of 0.8%. Within our population 21% are over the age of 65 and the number aged 65 and over will rise by two-thirds between now and 2030. Approximately half our population live in the City of Gloucester and the Spa Town of Cheltenham and around half live in the Forest of Dean and across the Severn Vale and the Cotswolds Hills. Our effective catchment population is higher than our countys population as our Trust receives secondary care referrals from Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.
