Job summary

This Library Assistant apprenticeship at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an exciting opportunity to learn new skills and become part of the Trust Library & Knowledge Services.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone with a desire to learn and develop customer service skills with a view to beginning a career in Library Services and gain a Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant (Level 3) apprenticeship.

Main duties of the job

Throughout the apprenticeship journey you will:

  • be supported in the workplace
  • have the equivalent of a day a week off-the-job training to develop your learning
  • be in regular contact with the Training Provider and the Apprenticeships and Careers Team
  • have access to a virtual learning platform
  • attend workshops / webinars where you will have the opportunity to discuss and share

The Apprentice Library Assistant is required to uphold confidentiality at all times, be expected to be professional, treat everyone with kindness and respect, and have the confidence to communicate with members of the public and staff at all levels.

Job responsibilities

Job purpose

This is a customer facing role with a significant amount of time on the library enquiry desk. You will deal with library users either face to face, via email or by telephone resolving day to day enquiries.

The second major component is the provision of books and journal articles for end-users via the document delivery/interlibrary loan service.

Administrative tasks to support the successful functioning of the Library & Knowledge Service are a crucial element to this role.

The successful applicant will receive Induction and training appropriate to the activities he or she will undertake, and during this induction period will be enrolled to the Level 3 Library, Information and Services Archive Assistant Apprenticeship with the Training Provider.

The Apprentice will be expected to complete the elements of the apprenticeship within the 18 months timeframe. The apprenticeship includes:

    • Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant Level 3 Standard
    • Functional Skills (Level 2)
    • English (written and spoken English) (Level 2)
    • Mathematics (analysing and presenting data in appropriate formats) (Level 2)
    • Health and Safety and Employee rights and responsibilities
    • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (to encourage the thinking processes of skills and tasks within the working environment)Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reserves the right to terminate employment if the training requirements as detailed above are not achieved.

Essential

  • Minimum of 4 GCSE's (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics
  • GCSE GCSE Grade C (4) or above in English and Maths or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths
  • Use of a Library for research or study
  • Practical experience of providing excellent customer service
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to manage a varied workload and prioritise accordingly
  • To be flexible and proactive depending on the needs of the service
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Confident using the internet, IT systems and Microsoft Office packages
  • Ensure a smart, professional image
  • Committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
