Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (or AHP equivalent) to be part of the expanding Acute Care Response Team. They would be joining a highly regarded and important service that offers huge potential for both professional and personal development alongside opportunities to influence and guide the future service.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will take the lead in reviewing/managing deteriorating patients across all specialties, making appropriate referrals and optimising patient safety. They will support doctors and ward teams and enjoy a high degree of autonomy. They will also support trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) with the service.

About us

The Acute care Response Team provides an urgent response to sick and deteriorating patients. The service provided is across both Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals and is 24/7.

Job responsibilities

Candidates will be required to demonstrate excellent clinical and communication skills and work independently in challenging circumstances whilst maintaining excellent clinical standards for acutely ill / deteriorating patients and their families.

The successful candidate will utilise considerable post registration experience within an acute speciality, qualifications in physical assessment and physiological reasoning along with non-medical prescribing. They will use acquired skills to review, diagnose deteriorating patients in order to establish and deliver management plans, whilst also liaising appropriately with senior clinicians.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with considerable post registration experience including some within an Acute Speciality
  • Masters level qualifications in physical assessment, physiological reasoning and non-medical prescribing (level 7) and evidence of using them in acute settings
  • Work independently and support work of ward nursing and junior medical staff in managing acutely ill and deteriorating patients
  • Utilise blood results, scans and xrays alongside clinical findings in order to make clinical decisions
  • Prescribe safely for patients across a wide range of specialties
  • Enhanced levels of dexterity/accuracy pertaining to clinical skills e.g. venepuncture, cannulation, arterial blood gases
  • Knowledge and experience of ethico-legal principles pertaining to escalation of care and resuscitation decision-making
  • Recognise when critical care input is required and communicate effectively with Directorate of Critical Care staff
  • Communicate effectively (both verbal and written) with all staff and particularly with medical and surgical registrars
  • Be an integral part of the Resuscitation Team when attending 2222 calls for acutely unwell patients or cardiac arrests
  • Motivated and enthusiastic with the ability to remain calm in urgent clinical situations
