Specialist Health Visitor/School Nurse- Complex & Vulnerable Families

The closing date is 25 August 2025

Job summary

We are seeking a passionate qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) to join our dynamic 0-19 team. This Specialist Post for Complex and Vulnerable families, is an exciting opportunity for the right professional to really make a difference to the lives of babies, children, young people and their families across the city.

Being vulnerable can happen at any time within any family. Facing multiple, complex or overlapping challenges can significantly impact parents or carers health and wellbeing and subsequently could impact their capacity or ability to care for their family. To an experienced health visitor or school nurse this will be familiar and they will understand that during these times, families require early identification of their needs, special care and non-judgmental support, or protection through multi- agency approaches. They will also be aware that it increasingly difficult for families or young people to access appropriate support which increases their risk of harm or exploitation.

If you are a qualified Health Visitor or School Nurse with experience of working with the more vulnerable babies, children, young people and their families, then this might be a great opportunity to develop further and really make a difference.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Specialist Health Visitor / Specialist School Nurse for Complex and Vulnerable Families focuses on identifying vulnerabilities and complexity affecting families early, supporting them to access early intervention and the help that they need when they need it. There is a fantastic multi-agency Early Help system of support in Newcastle, and we pride ourselves on our collaborative approach to working within this.

This role needs a special leader with excellent knowledge and communication skills to challenge and provide strategic initiatives for our service delivery to support this vulnerable population.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a comprehensive understanding of the current public health challenges and opportunities both nationally and locally and the initiatives that are all underpinned by policy. For this, a good understanding of the strengths and challenges of population health within Newcastle as a city will be important.

This post will require understanding of pathways across the full 0-19 offer, with demonstratable comprehensive knowledge around The Healthy Child Programme for both school health and health visiting aspects to enable effective leadership in initiatives and project management across the service.
