The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Trust Doctor in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (ST1-2)

The closing date is 23 July 2025

Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled resident doctor at ST1-2 level to support our existing clinical team in the delivery of clinical care to our inpatients. Our ward is a true General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology ward providing exposure to a broad range of clinical presentations and diagnoses. The post will suit a resident at ST1-2 looking to increase their clinical experience, build leadership and management skills, experience safety and governance work in the NHS. There are teaching, research and audit opportunities along with the possibility of experiencing some specialist clinical pharmacology clinical presentations.

Candidates must possess full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application and previous paid NHS experience is required. We typically receive several hundred applications for ST1/2 locally employed doctor posts and we will therefore only shortlist candidates with paid NHS experience (this does not include Clinical Access or Clinical Observership placements) which is an essential criteria within the Person Specification. Please do not apply if you do not have paid NHS experience as this leads to significant clinician time reviewing applications from applicants who will not be shortlisted.

Please read attached Job Description and Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

Based exclusively at the Royal Victoria Infirmary this role aims to provide ST1-2 support to the existing Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics multidisciplinary team, primarily on our inpatient wards. Our team includes 3 resident doctors at training grades lower than ST1, 3 ST3+ residents and 4 consultants, plus physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing and administrative support.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

For an informal discussion and further information regarding the opportunity and Directorate, please contact: Dr Simon Hill, Head of Department, at simon.hill@nhs.net
