Clinical Fellowship in Major Trauma Rehabilitation

Job summary

The post is appropriate for doctors with an interest in a medical, surgical (trauma and orthopaedics) or general practice career due to the range of patient presentations and problems seen on the trauma rehabilitation unit. The candidate will be responsible for the day to day care of patients in the unit.

Main duties of the job

Attend the ward daily and review all patients (with the RM consultant when available and also with support from acute clinical teams), aiming to providing continuity and to support therapy staff.

Review patients' background medical information with regard to chronic condition management during rehabilitation and prevent secondary complications.

Attend and provide medical input to the MTRU MDT meetings.

Liaise and collaborate with parent team junior doctors to update on changes to patient status including ordering (and taking if necessary) of bloods, XRs, other tests, prescriptions and discharge arrangements as appropriate.

Follow/chase up results and action issues generated with senior support and guidance.

Attend ward rounds/ad hoc patient reviews with parent teams, including daily trauma (A and E) round for MTRU patients.

Clerk in and be familiar with presentation, progress and plans for all new admissions to MTRU.

Be first point of contact for emergencies on the unit and queries from nursing and therapy staff

Working with the major trauma coordinators, major trauma rehabilitation leads and Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine to contribute to the rehabilitation assessment and rehabilitation prescription process for major trauma patients.

Liaise with and support patient's families and carers.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered medical degree.
  • Registration with the GMC

Desirable

  • Full or partial higher qualification
  • MRCP, MRCGP, MRCS, MRCPsych or other equivalent may be acceptable.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good history & examination skills relevant to Rehabilitation Medicine.
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
  • Able to order appropriate investigations.
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice.
  • Demonstrates understanding of working in trauma in a rehabilitation capacity.
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
  • Experience at an equivalent level to successful completion of F2 competencies.
  • Experience of working in inpatient specialist rehabilitation.

Desirable

  • Clinical experience of rehabilitation medicine.
  • Clinical experience in related specialty with rehabilitation element e.g elderly care medicine, stroke medicine, neurology.
  • Experience of working in trauma in a rehabilitation capacity.
