Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a highly skilled, dynamic podiatrist with extensive experience of managing patients with foot ulceration, and lower limb arterial disease, many of whom will also have Diabetes.

This Lower Limb Ischemic Management Service (LLIMS) is an expansion of the current service which has been open to patients with Diabetes and is part of an initiative to reduce health inequalities in the area. The post holder will work with the Vascular surgery department based at the Freeman, leading a small team of podiatry, nursing and support staff, who will manage any patients from across the Northeast and North Cumbria (NENC)area with foot ulceration and lower limb vascular disease or Chronic Limb threatening Ischaemia (CLTI).

Main duties of the job

The post holder must have excellent clinical, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to positively influence effective team dynamics. Teaching and dissemination of skills and knowledge to a wider staff group of all grades and disciplines is a vital part of the role, as will be triage of referrals at point of entry into service.

Clinical and operational leadership is core to the role, and you will take the initiative with continual service review, audit and quality improvement activities to maintain safe and effective clinical care and best use of resources.The team will have a varied programme; sharing the responsibility for the care of both in and outpatients with foot ulceration, and lower limb vascular disease. Hence the day-to-day operational leadership and organization is key to the smooth running of the service.

The post holder will expertly assess, diagnose, treat and co-ordinate the multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of lower limb vascular disease pathologies, using the latest evidence-based practice and technologies such as Periflux and Toe pressure kits.

Overall, the role will require well developed skills in communication, negotiation and prioritisation, and a commitment to continually develop pathways through service improvement to ensure the best quality of care is being provided to our patients.

Job responsibilities

  • To streamline the referral and patient flow from across NENC, of patients with Foot ulceration and lower limb vascular disease which may require triage, assessment, investigation, surgery and ongoing care planning
  • Have knowledge and experience of using advanced wound care techniques such as Topical Negative pressure, Stimulan and Larvae therapy where most appropriate
  • To use IRMER qualification to refer for radiological investigations
  • Support and deliver an MDT approach to managing complex foot ulceration, by leading the weekly virtual Vascular/Foot MDT with consultant colleagues from Diabetes, Orthopedics, Microbiology, Radiology, Infectious diseases and Vascular
  • Support the Vascular team in decision making for patients, including treatment options and discharge planning
  • Build on established joint working relationships with local podiatry colleagues from around the region
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines to develop Evidence based practice treatment modalities, and standard operating procedures which can be used across the Trust
  • Monitor service progression, clinical effectiveness and patient outcomes via the Audit process
  • Support the team to communicate effective care planning post assessment with relevant parties
