Job summary
We are looking for an individual with a specific interest in Children with Complex Airway needs. The opportunity has risen for a Band 6 Paediatric Complex Airway Nurse Specialist to work across the Newcastle Trust and Community setting to provide expert advice to other healthcare professionals across the region. The successful applicant will work alongside a Band 7 Complex Airway CNS and Paediatric Respiratory Consultants to provide expert clinical care and leadership for BCYP (Babies, children and young people) with complex airway management such as tracheostomy airway management and other complex respiratory conditions, covering both medical and surgical conditions . The post holder must have some post registration experience within the specialist area of practice and have a flexible and adaptable approach to act as a resource and role model in the clinical area.
The post is for 34.5 hrs per week to be flexible to the needs of the service. The services is covered and the working pattern will ideally be 6 x 10hr and 1 x 9.5hr shift over a 14 day period predominantly covering the service Wednesday - Friday.
The post holder will be supported to develop their career and will have the opportunity to bring their own ideas to improve service delivery across the GNCH. They must be prepared to undertake further training such as clinical skills and nurse prescribing appropriate to service need.

Main duties of the job
- Providing specialised advice to specialties and teams, demonstrating sound clinical knowledge and expertise in the management of the BCYP within the service
- Actively participate in team meetings
- Provide emotional support, education and guidance to families to support understanding of their child's condition , treatment plana and ongoing needs
- Providing training around paediatric tracheostomy care for staff in paediatric areas
- Support cascade training for educating staff / families in preparation for discharge
- Provide expert advice and BCYP presenting acutely and electively with a tracheostomy. The post holder will participate in the appropriate tube selection, upsizing and trouble shooting airway issues
- Contribute to research and evidence-based practice , Participating in the development of care pathways and protocols
- Contribute to the maintenance of a database of CYP with tracheostomies

The post-holder will have excellent communication and development skills, and a good understanding of the issues linked with caring for BCYP and families with complex airway needs and the teams who care for them. They should be self-motivated, an excellent communicator and have proven clinical and educational skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team as well as autonomously to prioritise and problem solve.
It is essential that you hold a current Healthcare Professional Registration and have recent experience of working in a clinical environment. You will be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and should be a practice assessor and ideally hold a teaching or assessing qualification.
It is essential the post holder has a current driving licence. They will be responsible for providing a key link and work collaboratively across organisations and within acute and community settings across the region. The post will be based within GNCH.
